* Jesse Continued...*

I planned to stop and grab some food before heading to her house, nothing exciting just a couple of burgers and some chips.

What girl doesn't love some good takeaway.

I pulled up in her driveway and sauntered to her front steps full of cockiness but as I went to knock on the front door I found my hands had started to get sweaty.

'Pull it together dude' I mumbled to myself before wiping my hands on my shorts, taking a deep calming breath I finally knocked on the front door.

I stood waiting for her to answer for what felt like hours, maybe she wasn't home?

Where else could she be though? I didn't think she had a car and I know she couldn't have walked far on that injured ankle.

All of a sudden the door opened wide and there she stood in all of her beautiful glory, wearing a baggy shirt and a pair of very short shorts that only accentuated the length of her legs.

My eyes were instantly drawn to her face, her eyes were red and puffy, almost glazed. She didn't smell like booze so I doubted she was drunk and her pupils weren't dilated so I didn't think she was high either.

Has she been crying?

'Hey.. are you ok?' I asked my voice full of concern as I stepped forward and reached out and placed my hand gently on her arm.

'Fine' she replied simply, as she turned and hobbled back inside.

I took the fact that she didn't slam the door in my face as an invitation to follow her inside.

I watched her cautiously as she flopped down on the couch and let out a deep, sad sigh.

'Did somebody hurt you?' I asked, almost seeing red at the thought of someone hurting her, this girl I barely even knew.

'Not recently' she replied flatly, her voice emotionless as she looked distractedly at the black screen of the tv hanging on the wall.

'Not recently? What the hell does that even mean?' I asked myself as I opened my mouth to question her further, I quickly noted the change in her mood and thought better of it then to push the issue.

'Ahhh.. you hungry?' I asked instead, thrusting the brown paper bag out towards her as I nervously rubbed the back of my neck with my free hand.

'Hmmm' she mumbled as if she didn't hear a word I just said.

'Food?' I asked again, a hint of annoyance creeping into my voice.

Instead of replying she just continued to study me intensely, just as she had the previous night.

'Ok, well if you're not going to eat, I sure as hell am' I grunted in frustration, dropping down on the couch next to her as I opened the brown bag and dug in.

She didn't move a muscle or utter a single word the whole time I ate, she just sat and watched me intently.

After I finished my share of the food she finally spoke.

'What do you want?' She asked, her perfectly arched brows furrowing in confusion, her deep blue eyes boring into mine.

'Huh?' I asked a little surprised at the directness of her question.

'What do you want?' She asked again, a little slower this time.

'Nothing' I shot back, trying to hide my annoyance. How could I answer her simple question when I couldn't even tell myself why I was here, why I had such a strong urge to just be near her.

'Then why are you here?' She asked, there was no malice or annoyance in her tone. Instead her voice held nothing but curiosity as her eyes focused intently on mine.

The sizzling chemistry between the two of us had returned full speed, the intensity between us had become too much for me to bare and so I reacted like  I always do, in anger.

'Shit I don't know' I retorted, unable to contain my anger that was bubbling to the surface 'but I'll fucking leave if that's what you'd prefer' I continued on as I jumped up off the couch and started to storm towards the door.

'Jesse' she whispered, her voice so soft and fragile made my heart ache. Hearing how sad her voice had become and how my name seemed to roll so effortlessly off her tongue stopped me in my tracks.

'I didn't say that' she continued on, I didn't think it was even possible but her voice had become so soft it was barely audible.

Her words caused me to instantly soften as I turned around to face her again, however I didn't make any effort to return to the couch instead it was my turn to study her.

I tried to read what was going on behind those big blue eyes but I just kept coming up blank.

I hated not being able to read a situation, to read people but whatever demons this girl was fighting she was keeping them close to her chest.

I don't know how long I stood there staring at her, while she stared right back at me, her gaze not wavering once. It was like we were playing a game of chicken, neither of us wanting to lose when finally she caved.

'Thanks for the food' she said, reaching over and helping herself to what was left in the bag and switching on the tv, acting as if everything that just happened between us was completely normal.

'You're so fucking frustrating' I grumbled as I walked back to the couch.

'I know' she replied thoughtfully as she flashed me a small smile before she popped a couple of chips in her mouth.

'Fair enough' I said, a little taken aback at her honesty.

'Here, you choose' she said simply as she handed me the tv remote and finished her food without another word.

'What a fucking weird day' I thought to myself as I sat down on the couch next to her and flicked through the channels looking for something to watch.
