<<hello there! so, before we begin, just wanted to remind you guys this is an alternate ending! If you didn't like how the book ended with chapter 18 and the epilogue, this is for you! Just as a warning, much fluff and happiness ahead :)>>
George stumbled backwards. He had imagined this scenario several times in his head, but most of them ended with Dream being skewered by George like a kabob.
Clay let out a breath, staring at the floor in front of him. This gave George a few moments to gather his wits.
He swung his saber out, the end of it floating only inches from Clay's exposed throat.
"Don't say that," George hissed.
Clay looked up, locking eyes with George. His face held several expressions. Guilt, sadness, hope, and resolve.
George felt his eyes cutting through his soul, breaking him down. But he wasn't going to let Dream see that.
"Stop...saying that," George said. Clay wasn't even fazed. He held eye contact with George. He knew that if he didn't follow through with this, he would die. And he wouldn't die happy.
"George, I mean it. I always meant it," Clay said, dropping his lightsaber to the floor.
George felt his heart being tore in several different directions. His brain was telling him to kill Dream, end all of his problems once and for all. But his heart was telling him that this is Clay.
He wanted to listen to his heart, reach out to Clay, but he had been hurt far too many times. All he was doing was setting himself up for failure.
Clay noticed the torn look on George's face as his hand, holding the lightsaber, quivered slightly.
"George," Clay whispered. George looked into his eyes again. "I know I haven't given you any reason to trust me, but please."
George saw the truth in his eyes. He hated to admit it, but now he knew he couldn't kill him.
George slowly lowered his lightsaber, deactivating it in his loose grip. He just stared at the floor, having absolutely no idea what to say.
"George," Clay said softly. He reached his hands out like he was approaching a scared animal.
George stayed where he was as Clay took a few steps closer to George, closing the small space between them.
Once he was right in front of George, George suddenly wrapped his arms around Clay, letting his tears fall into the other's dark robes.
Once Clay realized what was happening, he wrapped his arms around George, gently rubbing his back.
After a few minutes like that, George pulled out of the hug, wiping his eyes as he did. He looked up, his red and tear stained eyes meeting Clay's sharp green ones.
"I missed you," he whispered. This brought a smile to Clay's face.
"I missed you too," he said softly.
They stayed like that, staring at each other for a while, taking in each other's features and memorizing their faces.
Finally, Clay couldn't wait any longer. He reached his hand out, gently cupping George's cheek. George looked momentarily flustered, but soon leaned into his hand.
Clay took that as a good sign, and closed the distance between their lips. The kiss would have looked short and sweet to anyone else, but to the two boys, it was absolutely perfect. It held years worth of emotions, all of them being shared as their lips connected.
