A Lesson Unlearned

If only I had

Known this world

Well enough

To comprehend its words

Its melodies along

The lyrics of time

Humming throughout

All our lives

I could have learned

The song of breath

That she played

Before its death

I'd let her soft

Eyes, stay a while

Along with her smile

In my thoughts

Her pretty fingers

I'd let them linger

As she strung

The jingle of life

Maybe I would

Better remember

The end notes

Her laugh had cried

Rhythm blurred

Her music misheard

The poetry ignored

I'd let them fly

To hearts rehearsed

In language of love

No pitch would go

As debris of time

Our hearts would dance

To its beat

Once more would life

Not be just it.
