There's something about Tony Stark that no one knows, he loves the rain. Not just the soft pitter patter of light morning rain, but the loud and chaotic thunderstorms. He likes to make his way to the roof and sit near the edge, feeling calmer and calmer as his clothes soak through.
He always goes to the roof on his bad days, the days when the nightmares seep into his waking state. The sweat that soaks his clothes with always washed away by the rain soaking them. Washing away the pain and the memories.
This week however he's had a total of five bad days, it would've been one if it had rained on the first day. But the sky was bright and sunny and blue, and Tony hated it. The sun seemed to laugh in his face pushing pain behind his eyes.
It hadn't rained in five days, and each one got worse. Even if it had rained, he'd had so much work to do that he wouldn't even have time to think about the rain.
He's sitting in his lab when he gets the notification for a meeting with Fury. Seriously, he'd literally just had one about five hours ago. He shook his arms and hands, standing up to head to the meeting room. He walked in earlier than the others for once, he wasn't in the middle of a project so he had a little time. If only it had rained.
The rest of the team filed in and took there seats, Tony didn't pay attention to them though.
"Alright thank you for coming, we're goi to be going over basic forms for the upgraded Shield ranking test to make sure you're all positioned where you should be" Fury announced.
Tony hand tapped away on his right knee, then on the paper that he was told to read. He skimmed over the words knowing his position as 'avengers consultant' wouldn't change despite the fact he fights along side them.
"In a hurry to get somewhere Stark?" Fury asked pointing out Tony's fidgeting.
"N-" at that second the soft sound of rain sounded out side the meeting room window, "yes I do" he smiled a little on the inside, maybe today would be the last day.
"So where?" Asked Clint, ever nosy.
"No where that concerns you bird brain" he quipped. If he thought about it too much he would realize that he did want someone to come up with him. Not to talk just to give him company, an un touching support beam. Yet he realized every time that none of the people in this room would be particularly pleased with the thought of sitting in the rain until their body started shivering.
Besides no one would want to sit there and watch as he breaks down in synchronicity with the sky. He always cry's, he doesn't know if it's the rain that forces the tears or if up there he feels emotionally vulnerable. He doesn't quite care why he always cries but he always does. Because in a strange way it always makes him feel better.
"Well you're going to be in here filling these forms out for a while so I'll order food for you" Fury announced and Tony's heart sank. "Looks like you won't be going where you wanted Stark" no he needed this what if this is the only time it rains in a while he can't feel like this for much longer god he's so tired he needs to cry. His eyes started tearing up on their own accord so he stood up and left the room before they could notice. He raced to the stairs and sprinted up them, forgetting he had an elevator. He was winded and his chest was on fire by the time he reached the top but he managed to squeeze out,
"J don't tell them where I am" before falling to lean his back against the wall he always sits at. The tears fall as fast as the rain, and he watches the sky open up as lighting strikes a tower. The thunder drowns out his own thundering heartbeat, and he cries. He cries as he lets it all out, the past five days of nothing but memories and bad thoughts washed away with the rain. He sits until his body is shivering and stays even after it stops. He knows he could get hypothermia because the seizing of a body's shivering while cold is a tell tale sign of the beginning of It. But he doesn't care, he's crying and he doesn't know if he'll stop.
"Where did he go?" Asked Clint who was smacked across the back of the head by Natasha.
"That's what we're trying to figure out dimwit"
"Jarvis where's Tony" asked Steve.
"I'm afraid I can't tell you Mr.Rogers"
"Can you pull up the video cameras from the moment he left the meeting room" asked Bucky stepping forward, even he had no idea where Tony could be.
"Yes sir Barnes" The video popped up and they watched Tony break off into a sprint towards the stairwell. The cameras switched between each other to focus on Tony as he rapidly ascended the steps.
"Damn he really needed to get somewhere" Clint commented. The cameras showed Tony running straight to the roof where he stopped and said something, before he headed across the roof and to a wall parallel to the edge. He slouched down against it and clutched his hair, his shoulders shook with unmistakable sobs.
Bucky looked up from the screen and sprinted the same way Tony went. He made it to the roof within minutes and slowly approached Tony's small form.
"Hey Tones?" He asked carefully.
Tony sniffed, "I'll come back down in a few minutes I just-needed to come up here" he mumbled.
"Is this where you were in a hurry to get to" Bucky paused, hearing the others by the door. "Is it the rain?"
"Y-yeah" Tony must've been incredibly exhausted, thought Bucky, because he continued to speak, "it just I don't know, makes it easier to cry. I-I've had a bad day it was a bad day. The past five days have been bad days."
"Oh tones" Bucky whispered before sitting down him front of Tony, his legs crossed. He took Tony's hands away from his face and held onto them. Tony stared back, biting his lip to stop himself from crying. The chill of Tony's hands made Bucky slip of hiss jacket and place it gently around the mechanics shoulders. "You can cry, you came up here to cry so do it. I'm not here to judge you I'm here for you" he passages his thumbs on the pulse points of Tony's wrists.
Tony's face crumpled up and tears leaked from them as freely as the rain leaked from the sky. There's a beauty in this type of pain, thought Bucky. The reflection between the raw emotion and the natural element, it just makes sense to cry during a thunderstorm. The universe is letting out its emotions so why shouldn't you?
They sat like that until the others decided to give them privacy, until Tony became too exhausted and fell against Bucky's chest. The super soldier picked up the fragile man and carried him inside, just as the rain seized falling. The last strike of lighting ad the lights were turned off. The last roll of thunder and a gentle kiss was placed on his head. A head that still harbored massive storms, but for once those storms were at bay. At least for one more day.
