Chapter Twenty Six: On the Edge of Hell

-Beacon.-

"And that's the latest on this 'Crawler' from Ruby's report." Ironwood said.

Godzilla looked at the map that Ironwood made, and nodded.

"Do we know where it came from?" He asked. "No. Where it came from is still a mystery." Ironwood replied.

The door opened behind the two, and Yang and Blake entered the room. "You wanted to see us?" Blake asked.

Godzilla turned to face the two, and nodded. "How's Ruby doing?" He asked.

"About as well as we could expect." Yang said sadly. "I don't think she'll get over what she went through anytime soon."

Godzilla sighed. "Few ever do. But Ruby is strong. She'll be fine." He said.

Ironwood politely coughed to get everyone's attention. "I called you here for a mission. We need you to scout the Emerald Forest. Reports say the Grimm are getting riled up as of late." He said.

"And you want us to see if they are." Blake stated.

Ironwood nodded, then gave the two a device. "It's a portable communicator. Put it in one ear, and we'll stay in contact." He explained.

"Look General, all due respect, but Ruby just went through hell." Yang said. "She needs us here."

Godzilla stepped forward. "I agree. But the last scouting Team General Ironwood sent was attacked and wiped out by this new Hybrid. I'm sorry, Yang, but you two are the only ones that I trust to stay safe." He told her.

"Godzilla asked for you both after a... somewhat heated debate." Ironwood affirmed.

Yang tried to find a counter point, but after a minute let out a resigned sigh. "Fine." She said.

"I know you're worried about your sister, but this needs to be done. Watch each other's backs, and if you run into the Hybrid, then fall back. No heroics. Alright?" Godzilla asked.

Yang and Blake nodded, then made their way to the forest.

-The Emerald Forest.-

Yang and Blake had managed to get far into the Emerald Forest before they decided to take a break.

"Well. So far, no Grimm. Guess we should head back?" Yang asked.

"Still no sign of the Crawler either. Something doesn't feel right." Blake noted.

"Yeah. It's way too quiet here. During our initiation, this place was a cacophony of noise." Yang added.

A loud snap caused the two to draw their weapons. As a few tense moments passed, they heard the sound of heavy footsteps heading their way.

Yang and Blake were ready for a pack of Beowolves or a pride of Saberteeth... But they weren't ready for a Goliath to burst out of the trees.

"MOVE!" Blake yelled, as they dodged the rampaging Grimm.

They ran deeper into the woods, the Grimm hot on their heels. The Goliath had just lost its herd and now it was taking its aggression out on anything in sight.

Which unfortunately meant Blake and Yang were its target.

Yang and Blake went hard right into a thicket that hid them from the enraged Elephant Grimm, but it continued searching for the two.

"I think we're good." Yang whispered. "Can we please head back now?"

"Yeah. Let's get back to Vale." Blake replied. Suddenly a loud snap rang out... Right behind them.

The two turned around slowly, and saw the Crawler, camouflaged in the foliage as its skin turned back into the normal Grimm black and white.

It was much bigger now, half the size of a Goliath, but it still wasn't fully grown. It growled at the two new morsels in front of it.

They wouldn't help it grow anymore, but they would be a nice little snack.

"RUN!" Yang screamed. The two broke into a dead sprint as the Crawler charged after them.

"It can camouflage!?" Blake shouted. The Crawler roared at the two as it started to gain on them.

Blake and stopped as they ran into the Goliath that had chased them. It turned its gaze to them before the Crawler caught its ire.

The Crawler roared at the Goliath who bellowed its response at the carnivore.

Yang grabbed Blake and the two ran, as the Crawler charged the Goliath and pounced on its face.

The Goliath tried to shake the Grimm Hybrid off as the Crawler tried to bite the Grimm.

The Goliath wrapped its trunk around the Crawler's waist and threw it off.

The Crawler squealed in surprise as it hit the ground, but recovered fast enough to dodge the Goliath's massive foot from caving its skull in.

The Crawler hissed at the Goliath who let a deep rumble out at the Grimm Hybrid.

The Goliath then charged the Crawler, but the Hybrid dodged and tried to pounce onto the Grimm's side, but the Goliath swung its head at the Crawler and hit it with its tusks.

The Crawler squealed as it hit the ground, knocked out by the impact. The Goliath moved to finish the Grimm Hybrid by crushing it underfoot.

But the Crawler had one more trick up its sleeve.

Bolting up suddenly, it lashed out with its tongue and scratched the Grimm's right foreleg with the barb that was on the end of the appendage.

A barb that also secreted a nasty paralytic toxin.

The Goliath stood unsteadily for a moment, before collapsing, its entire body completely numb.

Completely defenseless against the Crawler.

The Grimm Hybrid lunged at its helpless prey and tore out its jugular, swallowing it and then proceeded to tear the Grimm apart, eating it at its leisure.

After the first few chunks of flesh were devoured and the corpse disappeared, the Crawler started groaning, as its body started growing.

Its limbs grew longer, its body got bigger, and bony protrusions and plates appeared on its body. The sound of bones popping as they grew at a rapid rate, could be heard along with the pained roars of the Crawler.

After a few minutes, the process was complete. The Crawler was now as big as Muto in her Kaiju form, and as it roared into the night sky, its sight was set on Vale.

It was done growing.

The Crawler is now fully grown! It's about to get bloody now. Also, the Crawler's skin has chromatophores that allow it to camouflage in deep jungle. But it doesn't seem like it'll be hiding now doesn't it? As always, comment, rate, and leave advice so I can improve. Next time, the Siege of Vale begins! Have a good night guys.
