"A sky full of stars and he was staring at her."
- AtticusThird Person POV
The little boy with curious sea-green eyes stared at the rickety sign in awe.
Peter Johnson's Star-Gazing Camp: Right This Way!
The little boy couldn't help but jump up excitedly. He spent hours convincing his mom to let him attend, and he was finally here. He was seven years old! It was time to do mature things, like star-gazing!
The little boy with the messy black hair ran to the huge lawn as fast as his tiny legs could carry him. He passed by many children and their parents relaxing on picnic blankets, staring up at the ocean of stars above them.
The little boy was called Percy, and he ran and ran until he couldn't run anymore. He reached the front of the wide lawn, panting and pausing to catch his breath. He looked around, taking in his surroundings. Here, there were also many children sitting on blankets or chairs with their friends or families.
The night air felt chill and still; the air was clear and the sky beautiful.
The little boy (who could be a little forgetful at times) was about to sit down when he realized something- he had forgotten to bring something to sit on! He scratched his head, looking around.
He contemplated his options.
The boy could sit on the grass, but there were lots of bugs there since it was the peak of summer. He was not in the mood to go home scratching his arms and legs vigorously.
His second option was to call his mom and ask her to bring a blanket for him. The problem with that, however, was that he would have to go up to a stranger and ask to use their phone. The little boy (who was a little shy at times) was still working on his people skills.
Not to mention, his mom would probably be a little angry at him.
And he really wanted his cookie privileges.
The third option (and probably most practical one) for the boy was to ask to sit with someone in their blanket. He would still have to talk to a stranger, but it was better than the other options. Plus, the little boy remembered to take a shower before coming to the camp, so he wouldn't smell bad.
Yes, the third option was the best one. The boy looked around, wondering who he should sit with. His eyes landed on a little girl sitting near the front of the hill. She was sitting on a huge blanket, her arms curled around her legs as she sat in a ball. The blanket was definitely big enough for him to join her, and the girl seemed approachable. He walked toward her silently to avoid disturbing her. If he wanted to sit with her, the little boy knew he would have to be as polite as possible.
The little boy, excited to watch the stars, stood beside the girl, waiting for her to notice him. He observed her. She looked about his age; her curly blonde hair shone in the moonlight, and her tan skin gleamed. She had piercing gray eyes that sparkled from the light of the stars. Her eyes were beautiful but a bit scary.
Maybe he shouldn't have approached her.
But then, the little boy noticed her expression. She looked content and satisfied, a small smile perched on her pink lips. The little girl looked to be in a good mood, so Percy seized his chance.
"Hey."
The little girl turned to face him, startled. The boy felt bad for distracting her from the view of the stars, but he really wanted to sit down. His legs ached.
"Hi." The girl chirped. She studied him briefly, then turned her attention back to the stars.
"Um, sorry for bothering you." Percy felt a bit silly talking to someone who wasn't looking at him.
