CHAPTER 5

Gift

I HALTED what I was doing when I heard a small sound of knock at the door made by someone outside.

"Come in," I said, putting down the paint brush I was holding.

I tilted my head towards the door, watching it slowly opening. There, my handsome tito Anton, smiling at me, entered the room.

"What is our baby doing?" he asked.

"Painting," I giggled.

"Oh, really? I bet it's another spectacular painting from our baby artist, huh."

"Oh, come on tito, pinapataba mo puso ko," sabay tawa kong sabi.

"What? Totoo naman, ah. You never failed to amaze us. But... why aren't you doing it in your art room? Ayaw mo na ba roon?" May pag-aalala ang tono ng boses niyang tanong sa akin.

I shook my head. "Nope, never. Gusto ko lang maiba muna ngayon. A little change won't hurt, right?"

"Of course, it won't," he agreed. "So, what's the story this time?" He sat on the other chair beside me as he anticipated for my answer.

"SU SONRISA," I smiled whilst looking at the abstract portrait of a boy in front of me. Every art has its own story and this time around the story I've made is about.... "A story of a boy who rarely smiles. But when he do smile, you will witness the most breathtaking view in the universe."

I wished I was like the boy I made. Who only smiles when he's happy. They said, it's an act of braveness but it's not for me. I think showing people your sorrow is more an act of braveness.

He brushed my hair with his huge hand. "Where do you plan to hang this one?" He pointed at it. "I'll help you."

"Uhm...." Biting my lips, I stood up from my seat and roamed my eyes around my room; looking for a right place to hang my painting.

"I want it there." I pointed my index finger to the wall just beside my door.

"Okay, then." Tito Anton also stood up and took the painting. He took his steps towards the direction I have pointed, and then hung the painting there. "Done," he smiled. "It's perfect."

"Thank you tito."

"Another batch of gifts, again?" He asked sitting on my bed as well as looking at the gifts.

"Yeah."

"You're not tired of it?"

"Nope. Why get tired of something people gave you? They tried so hard to muster up the courage to give me their gifts."

"You're really a good girl. Sana anak na lang din kita."

"Ops... that's a no no tito. I am only my mama and papa's daughter."

He chuckled. "I was just kidding baby. With your way of thinking, I bet there are lot of people outside there who misunderstands you."

Napaisip ako. "Uhm if I think of it... maybe, yes? There are some students from my school who hate me. Para sa kanila habol ko raw ay ang fame. Pero baka totoo naman iniisip nila. Perhaps, they know me more?" I jested.
