“You're contagious, baby. Love me when you love me, hate me--", the song ‘Torn’ by Ava Max bashed through my phone as the ringtone and I answered it agilely.
I looked at the caller ID before leaning it towards my ear. It was my classmate, Clementine. I could feel the tense atmosphere on the other line. “You okay, Clementine?”, I asked her worriedly. My friends shot me a confused look. I brought my index finger to my mouth, shushing them harshly.
“L-L-L-Liz...”, she was anxious. Very anxious. I could tell.
“Yes. You got my name correct. Not that I was NOT expecting you to, but I might've had a side-tracked thought that you had amnesia”, I said seriously. In a joking manner though. I also added, “After getting hit by a loaded truck. I was almost about to call your bffs Hacey and Elina to show them that not even their mom's scolding could compare to mine"
She chuckled with a bit of ease. “By the look of your cheerful tone--"
“You can't look at people's tone, silly. Now I’m seriously starting to wonder if you have amnesia. How long have you been in the hospital for? Is it necessary for me to bring flowers to your grave later today?”
She giggled. “Liz, don't interrupt me while I’m talking this time. You see--"
“I am not at the hospital yet, Clementine. I can't see what you are seeing at the moment. I beg your pardon. Oh, and I did not interrupt while you were speaking becosh you gib ishmol paush afther shayin you shee”
“I wonder which planet you came from. AND NO, LIZ! Don't reply to that! No, I can't sacrifice another sentence. Well, erm... err... Well, erm...”, she struggled. I waited patiently knowing whatever she was gonna say was most positively negative news.
“Erm... Liz, I suggest you t-t-take a look a-at the b-b-break...ing news”, she finished with enormous difficulty and quickly hung up on me as not sob through the phone. I pulled the phone away from my ear and looked at it as if it gave me a possibility to go back in time. I sighed and sent Clementine a reassuring message and didn't thank her since that's a rule of friendship between my class girls. I smirked inwardly.
“THAT IS IT, LIZ! I'VE LOST MY PATIENCE!”, shouted Hazel, making my eyes bore into hers without the slightest trace of flinching, “STOP STARING AT THE DAMN SCREEN AND TELL US WHO IT WAS—Wait, it was Clementine, na?—WELL, TELL US WHAT SHE TOLD YOU!”
I yawned, almost about to cry. “Sh-sh-she told us to watch the bb-b-breaking news... I think I might pass out... I hate listening to news and this might as well be the first time...unless I pass out right after clicking on the channel”
“Way to express your loathe for news, Liz. I feel ya", Scott said lugubriously, patting my shoulder with the feel of listening to news.
“Well, we're sorry for disrupting your... erm... rather glum discussion, but we're supposed to be heading downstairs, listening to the--", I stopped Rachel from saying any further.
“Don't... Don't use that word... It's verbal abuse", I begged drearily.
“Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't this go under the section overreacting?”, Sky eyeballed me while Anne broke into fits of giggle.
“You are very much true, Miss Frost”, Zepher bowed, “Now, if we may?”, he said majestically, holding the door open for us like a waiter.
“Do I have to?”, I moaned.
“It's your wish, Liz. But if you stay here, I wouldn't mind letting in Violet with a few false info so it would spread around Millington Ridge and Summershine”, Ashton said in a honeyed tone. I looked at him impassively.
