"Dammit, I burned the ham," I cursed as I frowned over the charred meat. I felt a gentle nudge by my side, only to find my salamander writhing with expectancy. "Sorry, Bean. Looks like supper's cancelled for tonight." The large reptile didn't take no for an answer and began to have another temper tantrum.

Kindling Salamanders were definitely the short-tempered type. Most hunters rarely kept them as companions due to how uncooperative they were. I, however, developed a certain soft spot for the creatures and thus, I found Bean.

The lizard chirped wildly, beckoning me to help him catch his next meal. Another odd tip about the beasts was they always preferred their prey to be cooked, and then used their flames to roast it. However, since Bean was aware that I could build a fire, he often chose not to exert his energy. In other words, I was his own personal chef.

As we both wandered through the dark forest, Bean caught a foreign scent. The lizard bared his fangs in caution. I soon followed his actions by unsheathing my sword. "What is it? An enemy?" I whispered. I knew he couldn't literally speak words, but I payed close attention to his behavior.

Wanting to exploit the issue, I climbed onto his slick back. Luckily, He still had his saddle fastened tight. Kindling Salamanders were actually nearly the size of horses. Bean slithered through the thicket, causing annoying things such as twigs and leaves to be caught on my person.

This went on for awhile until he stopped just short of a clearing. I hopped off the large animal and investigated. There seemed to be a cave up ahead. We eyed the opening in suspicion, but entered anyway. The inside was cold and almost pitch black if it weren't for the moonlight pooling in from the cave's mouth. The deeper we traveled, the darker it became, so Bean began to illuminate his own light through his skin. It was much more useful than a torch if I did say so myself.

Everything was still. Not a single sound other than the pitter-patter of our footsteps. I was on the verge of turning back until the potent stench of blood flooded my nose. Bean disliked the foul smell as well, for he was attempting to cover his nostrils with his talons. I suddenly felt an overwhelming anxiety soaking me up to the core. Right in from of us was a small totem statue. If I remember, there was one at the front too. We were in a goblin cave.

Bean was also unsettled by this. Or perhaps he sensed my distress. Either way, we were both ready to leave. As I was mounting him, I heard a swift wisp of air and a loud tear sounding from the fabric of the saddle. With nothing to grab onto, I collapsed on my back along with Bean's broken saddle. "Shit!"

The lizard assisted me to my feet and immediately got into position to attack. Multiple distant cackles and snickering echoed through the hollow cave. I wasn't sure how many, but there were dozens goblins headed right for us. As a defense mechanism, Bean's tail ignited into hot flames. "What should we do? Run or attack?" I asked. The animal faced me, eyes dilated to a fine line. His answer was obvious. We'd have to fight if we wanted to live.

Another arrow sliced through the darkness, though Bean was easily able to block it using his tail. The sound of tiny, yet vast footsteps along with their wicked laughter grew even louder, meaning that they were closing in.
