I was completely frozen on the spot

I was completely frozen on the spot. I felt that eerie spread of terror you feel through your body when a sudden realisation hits you and all you can do is stand and stare in silence, completely lost for words. Even my thoughts weren't processing in my head. The only sense of mine that seemed to be working was my sight and it was still focused on an amused looking Caden Clark, standing in front of me, waiting for me to speak.

As if all of the air suddenly re-entered the room, I gasped sharply and found myself gently shaking as my mouth hung open and I began to stutter nervously.

'I-I-I am...I'm s-so, so s-sorry.' I immediately got to my feet and began clenching my fists and digging my fingernails into my palms, something I did when I was extremely worked up and distressed. The inability to speak was another symptom of my raging anxiety and right now, I sounded like a complete idiot, especially after I had just given him full blown attitude about entering the department. Why did I have to let my pissed off mood affect me so much? Why hadn't I just asked him for his name first?

'It's not her fault, Mr. Clark,' Kam said, and I was thankful for him stepping in. 'Ava had no idea who you were.'

He nodded slowly and I had absolutely no idea what he was thinking as his eyes flickered over me.

'Sir?' Kamran said, softly.

'Oh, yeah, umm...excuse me, you kind of lost me at "Ava had no idea who you were" because, well...that's a first for me,' he said, smirking smugly and letting out a gentle laugh as he looked between us.

'I'm really sorry,' I repeated, not liking his cocky tone but all I could think about was ensuring I didn't get fired on the spot.

He shrugged apathetically and laughed again. 'It was funny. You should have seen your face.'

I frowned softly and stared at him in confusion. Did he really just say that?

'So,' he said, unbuttoning his navy suit jacket as he cocked his head to the side and studied me closely again. 'Am I alright to go through now? Or would you still like me to take a seat...Ava?'

'You can go,' I replied, softly, still in a state of confusion.

He smirked casually and walked away from the desk, pulling open the glass doors and heading inside.

'Are you okay?' Kamran asked me.

'What just happened?' I replied.

'Well, we just met our new boss,' Kam said. 'I doubt he'll forget about you anytime soon.'

'Oh no,' I sighed, turning to Kamran. 'That's not good! I don't want him to remember me; I just like being the quiet, little secretary in the background, just doing my job.'

'I'm guessing Caden is the type of person who is known wherever he goes and you're obviously the first person to not kiss his arse,' Kam laughed. 'At least he was cool about it!'
