'So...how are things?' Alex asked me, as we both sat at a tiny, corner table by the window. Alex was scoffing down a plate of tacos and I had decided to try out their homemade pizza, which was extremely delicious.
'Well, my meeting with Victor didn't go as bad as I'd thought it would,' I told him. 'Although...he was a little mean to me.'
'He was?' Alex questioned. 'How so?'
It was easy to talk to Alex. I knew no matter what I said, he would find a way to make it feel like it wasn't as bad as it seemed and put a positive spin on it. He made me feel like I could get through anything and that's why I really liked him.
'He suggested that I was bored with my boring desk job or something like that and that I made up the rumour to get my five minutes,' I told him.
'That is...wow...that's harsh,' Alex replied, his eyes wide with surprise. 'That is beyond mean.'
'It's okay, I guess he's just trying to protect his son, right?' I shrugged nonchalantly and took a bite of my pizza. 'This is heavenly by the way.'
'Oh, yeah the pizza is to die for here,' Alex chuckled. 'Anyway, I'm glad to see you haven't let the meeting get to you too much. Although...I'm still a little surprised you lied and took the fall to protect Caden.'
'I just...I thought it was the best thing to do,' I sighed. 'It sounds ridiculous but at least when it comes out that I lied, nobody will think that we were sleeping together anymore and I prefer that.'
'You prefer to be known as a liar than to be known as a girl who slept with a guy?' Alex questioned.
I cringed at him mentioning it. I liked Alex and I knew he liked me so it felt completely strange for us to be discussing my sex life involving another man when we hadn't even kissed yet. 'Well, yes. Everybody will get over me lying. Nobody will forget that I slept with him. It's not just some guy...it's the boss. The boss who every girl is practically in love with.'
'Are you?' he asked me, and I looked up at him and frowned. 'Sorry, that's inappropriate. I only ask because...you're protecting him.'
'I'm not in love with him,' I told him. 'I never liked him or had feelings for him. It was just something that happened between us.'
'It's okay, you don't have to explain yourself to me,' he said, quickly reaching out and resting his palm on top of my hand. 'It's none of my business; I shouldn't even be asking questions about it.'
'That's okay,' I told him. 'I feel better when I talk to you about stuff.'
'That's good to know,' he replied, with a wide grin. 'You can talk to me about anything.'
'Thank you.' I smiled back and turned my hand over so I could intertwine my fingers in his. I noticed the light pink colour spread onto his cheeks and it was adorable.
