I ignored all calls from Alex that night and the next day. I couldn't face him. I'd ruined the night, embarrassed myself and told him and Alicia that Caden and I had slept together. A small part of me prayed that Caden would lie and tell them that it was just me lying over my apparent obsession with him. I would rather have everyone think that than actually know I'd been sleeping with the boss.
I was up early on Sunday and straight to the gym to clear my head. After a long workout, I was still feeling uptight, so instead of walking back home, I jogged the long route back through the park. It was a clear day for December, but I would have preferred it to be dark and dreary so I felt like I had a good excuse to go home and lie in bed for the rest of the day.
Once I finally returned to the apartment, Keira smiled and greeted me with a quick hug. After getting a taxi home the night before, I had walked in crying and the second she'd saw me, she knew Caden had managed to fuck everything up. I told her everything and had to stop her from going out and finding him to kick his arse.
'Have you heard from Alex?' she asked me, as I grabbed a banana from the fruit bowl.
'I'm ignoring his calls,' I mumbled.
'Oh, Ava,' Keira sighed. 'It's not his fault. You should answer and explain everything.'
'Explain what?' I asked. 'Everything's a mess. I told him one thing and Caden told him another.'
'Just tell him the truth, Ava,' Keira said.
'I cannot tell Alex everything when Kam doesn't even know,' I sighed. 'I really don't want to talk about it, Kei.'
'Okay,' she murmured, softly. 'Well, is there anything I can do to make you feel better?'
'No,' I replied. 'Just let me mope about.'
'What about work?' she asked me. 'Are you still going back on Monday?'
'Absolutely not,' I replied. 'I'm emailing my resignation on Monday and asking if I can take those two weeks out as annual leave.'
'Then what?' Keira asked.
'I don't know, Kei,' I replied, harshly. 'I wasn't planning on any of that happening last night so I have no idea what I'm going to do with my life now. Once again, Caden has pushed me right back to the place I was in just under a week ago! He is dead set on ruining my life!'
'Okay, okay, you don't need to yell at me,' Keira sighed. 'But you need to start thinking of a plan, Ava. You need a job.'
'Well, I have you here to help until I figure things out,' I mumbled.
'Well...not really,' she said, awkwardly. 'I'm here as your friend to pull you through this but we still have bills that need paid, Ava. You need to find work.'
'Are you serious right now?' I asked her. Now I was pissed. How dare she?
'Well...yes,' she said, softly.
