"Conviction"
.... At school, Ryu was in class with his fellow students. Miss Wu-Li was at the black board droning on about history in her placid monotone way, "During the siege of the Northern Water Tribe, Admiral Zhao commanded a fleet of nearly hundreds of battleships." As the teacher's lecture dragged on, Ryu became bored and began acting disruptive. This behavior did not go unnoticed by the teacher, who reluctantly interrupted her history lesson and addressed Ryu, "Mister Honoo, are you even listing to me?" Ryu grinned and leaned back in his chair. Looking very satisfied with himself, Ryu nonchalantly looked around the room before answering, "Noooo—unfortunately I am hearing every word of a completely useless lecture about a weird bald kid with a blue d**k painted on his head!" Ryu smiled smugly as several students stifled giggles. One who saw no humor in his comment was Li-Yang. She was deeply offended at Ryu's slur of her great-grandfather Aang. She turned on him, "How dare you Ryu Honoo! That's my great grandfather you are defaming!" she practically yelled. Both weren't listening to Miss Wu-Li's repeated admonishments. Ryu smirked, "Li-Yang, everyone knows that no one cares about the Avatars anymore, they're long gone and, thankfully, aren't coming back—ever!" Ryu emphasized the last word with relish. A shocked hush fell over the room as Miss Wu-Li spoke up, "Ryu Honoo! How dare you say such things! Now, I understand that there are differences in opinions in this class, but I am the teacher and I decide the content of the history lessons taught---so, if anyone feels different, they can discuss it outside the classroom! And, Mr. Honoo--if I hear one more peep out of you, you are expelled from this school!!" she warned. Ryu rose to his feet and gathered his books, "Well, as a matter of fact, Miss Wu-Li, you won't need to warn me about any lesson anymore, because I am leaving this craptacular excuse for a school--goodbye you old hag!" Ryu shouted as he walked out. Miss Wu-Li, usually so calmly professional, took such offense to his comment that she hurled the eraser she held in her hand at his retreating back. Ryu closed the door behind him just in time, and, not missing the chance to provoke his former teacher one last time, he looked through the door's rectangular window and winked at the exasperated woman. Having missed her intended target, Miss Wu-Li's errant missile struck the doorknob sending up a plume of chalk. The students sat in stunned silence, shifting uncomfortably in their seats. Miss Wu-Li coughed, straightened her dress and casually walked to the dusty scene of her rare loss of composure, and picked the eraser off the floor. Red faced, Miss Wu-Li resumed her place at the front of the class and attempted to continue her routine lecture, as some of the students stifled nervous laughter.
.... Outside in the school hallway Ryu continued taunting whoever would listen, "Who the hell needs this school? One day I'll be in charge of all the Triads and eventually this entire city!" Ryu laughed uproariously, loving every minute of his triumph. Kara had unceremoniously left the classroom and followed Ryu. She pleaded with him to be more reasonable, "Ryu! Stop this insanity and come back to class—you'll be expelled!" Ryu stopped walking toward the exit and causally turned around. Smirking, he appraised the situation, "Ooh~ hello, there sweet-cheeks! So, still insisting on that do-good attitude---"oh let me save you, Ryu!" Kara looked about to cry, "Ryu, why are you acting like this? I know deep down inside that you're a good person...I just know it!" Kara insisted. Ryu cooed, "Kara, sweetie, there is no good in this world anymore, and, like I just schooled Wu-Li, your pathetic long-dead Grandma didn't solve any of the world's problems—people continue to hurt people, period!" Kara countered, "Ryu, despite what you say, Avatar Korra was a legend and a great heroine to the world!" Ryu grunted, "And just where is this Legend of Korra right now?" Kara had no answer. Ryu grinned, "Exactly. So, if you don't want to hook-up stay out of my way and quit blathering-on about your "amazing" grandmother---because, I'm sorry to have to break the news to you, sweet cheeks----no one cares anymore!" Ryu lightly shoved Kara aside and strode to the school exit. Kara felt dejected, "OK, I give up!" Kara turned and walked in the opposite direction, feeling like there was no more hope for Ryu Honoo.
