The date had really been going great until I got a flat tire. Especially seeing as we had originally met on Tinder, everything about it had exceeded my expectations. We had gone on two dates before, and Hallie and I had really hit it off. So of course, the universe had to shit on it because nothing ever goes well for me in terms of dating. Between being cheated on, ghosted, and that one girl who was arrested, I had just about given up on a relationship. But, my best friends had pushed me to give it another shot, and this girl had been promising.

I had at least made it back to Hallie's condo to drop her off before my tire blew. I was actually pulling up to the curb when I must have rolled over a nail or something in the gutter.

"I can't believe this is happening," I say, for probably the sixth time.

Hallie lets out a laugh, "It's okay, there's no way you could have known."

"Okay yeah, but I can't afford to call someone and I don't know how to change a tire."

She feigns a gasp and replies, "A lesbian who can't change a tire? You must be a bottom!"

"Hey, don't call me out like that," I laugh, "What about you, can you change a tire?"

"No, but I go both ways so it doesn't count," Hallie says with a smirk.

It was right around midnight on a Friday, and there was no way I could get my dad or my brother to come help me out of this until at least tomorrow morning. I would be stranded unless I could call a tow truck for help.

"Hey listen," Hallie starts, "I know we haven't known each other all that long, but you can stay at my place and I have a friend who I'll call to help you in the morning if you want?"

"Thank you so much, but I would hate to burden you with that," I say, flattered by her kindness.
She lowers her voice, "I mean, I was going to ask if you wanted to spend the night regardless of your tire being flat."

"Oh," I reply, and I can feel my cheeks flush, "So, did you put the nail in the road?"

Hallie throws her head back and laughs, "I should have," she says, "you're cute."

"Damn, get yourself a girl who'll risk property damage charges for you," I joke, "I'll stay for that."

A big smile lights up her face as she turns to fully face me, "Wait, really?"

I blush even harder, "Yeah, if that's okay?" I reply.

She pauses for a moment, then answers, "Well come inside then," before reaching for my hand and starting to guide me up to the front door.

Hallie gestures me in first and then follows, closing the door behind us. The first thing I notice about her home is that it smells really good. It's a warm and inviting smell of cocoa butter and spices, but not too overwhelming. It's relaxing and welcoming and I feel some of my nervousness fade a little bit.

It's a small space with the kitchen being right in front of us, and the living room off to the side. There are all sorts of plants hanging in windows and crowding tables and shelves, livening up the white walls with greenery. But hanging from the back window of the living room, in a pot the size of a small child, is the biggest ivy plant I have ever seen. It has vines that frame the window and stretch across, touching each corner of the back wall. The bookshelf that sits there is also covered, with some of the vines and leaves being so thick, you can't even see the books behind them.

Hallie laughs when she sees me staring at the plant in awe and says, "That's my ivy plant Becky, she's been with me for about six years now."
