Blue

Blue.

Nothing but blue.

Laying on the ground, looking up at the sky; blue.

It's not the blue that laps at the shore of the harbors near Long Island, but something more rich in color. Not rich like the fall foliage lining the trees in metropolitan New York, but rich like the perfectly cut grass on Ellis Island.

But I'm not in New York, I'm not home. I'm somewhere new, strange. California, they call it. It's alien to me. But California has the same color sky that New York does, so I guess it's not too bad.

"Chloe!" someone shouts my name from behind me. I slowly sit up from the dirt and look at who it was. My aunt stands there, hands on her hips.

"Get your lazy arse up off that ground young lady! Just look at that, you've gotten your dress all dirty!" I slowly stand up as she comes over and starts clucking about, throwing her hands up in the air every so often. I honestly couldn't care less what she's saying. All she ever does is criticize me about what I wear, what I eat, my weight and figure, what I say, how I act; pretty much everything I do. She wants me to be a "proper lady". Well she can take her idea of a "proper lady" and shove it up her own arse.

"Hey!" she suddenly shouts at me. I break out of my thoughts, and turn to look at her.

"Are you even listening with that dimwit brain of yours?" I continue staring blankly at her. She rolls her eyes and scoffs.

"As I was saying, Peter is coming by the house later today, I think he is a perfectly fine suitor for you, think he wants to marry you even. Now that's something you owe your uncle and I for taking you in and letting you use our resources. Be a proper lady, keep your trap shut, take yourself a nice husband-"

"I don't want a husband, I want a wife," I snap my mouth shut as soon as the words are out.

Her palm makes a solid slap noise as it connects to my cheek. I don't even flinch this time. I need to get better at holding my tongue. I only wanted to say the first part, the second part just kind of slipped out.  My aunt grabs a fistful of my hair and yanks my head down to her height.

"Listen good you disgusting freak, I swear that if you dare speak another vile word about that you will be thrown out!" she lets go of my hair and I straighten myself out.

"Now, Peter is coming tonight and you will show him what an excellent wife you would make," she smiles a cheery smile and then walks back into the house.

I stand for a moment and watch her go before laying back down on the ground. Maybe if I'm lucky the sun will fall out of that blue, blue sky, and gobble me and California and New York up with it.

Then I wouldn't have to marry a man.

If I can't marry a woman, then I might as well just stay single forever.

And I could lay in the grass all day, staring at the blue New York sky.

Listening to the wide open ocean waves roll into the rocks.

Surrounded by blue.
