Zamaki Academy is one of the most popular and renowned schools in Yola, Nigeria. The school sees to it that it provides a conducive learning environment for it’s students, without discomfort. The school’s security system is tight even, no child goes out or leaves the premises without the authorities informed.
As usual, the school closes at 2:00pm. Students then move from their classes to the playground for their parents to come get them home. Some of them play around, others engage themselves in conversations while few, sit to watch what goes on around them. Adnaan and his siblings are among the latter.
“It’s unlike Malam Bako to come get us late.” Aaliyah said pacing around at the same time glancing at her wristwatch.
“You’re right, he usually comes before time. Something must have kept him.” Adnaan replied tiredly.
“I am tired and very hungry.” Hanaan whined resting her head on Adnaan’s shoulder.
“He would be here soon okay, don’t get too tired.” He cooed fondling her arm.
“Are you Adnaan Jalo?” A security guard asked, as he approached them. Aaliyah turned to look at her brother skeptical as to why this man was asking who he was.
“Yes?” Adnaan replied. “How may I help you?” He asked doubting.
“Your driver has come to get you.” The man answered walking away, back to his duty post.
Hanaan stood up from the seat, sliding her bag on her shoulder already prepared to go before Adnaan stopped her. “Hanaan wait!” Adnaan called out to her making her halt.
“Something is odd somewhere, Malam Bako always comes to call us alongside the security guard. Why isn’t he here today?” He said with furrowed brows.
“I am wondering that too brother, what do you think is happening?” Aaliyah asked hands akimbo.
“Let me go see who has come to pick us,” He said standing up. “You guys should stay here till I get back.” He added and they gave a nod.
Adnaan walked swiftly to the gate in search of their car but instead, he didn’t sight it anywhere. He then decided to ask the security guard who came to them earlier. “Sir! Please where is our driver?” He asked innocently so as not to be doubted by him.
“He is over there.” He replied pointing to a black Audi.
“That is not our car.” Adnaan said to himself. “But I have seen it somewhere, it looks familiar though.” He adds thinking. He intently continues to watch the car, pondering on where he has seen it before. Then it struck him. “Father’s car!”
His face drained of any emotion, one couldn’t figure out what was going through his head. Adnaan hurriedly returned to his siblings; Hanaan was asleep clearly from exhaustion on Aaliyah’s lap.
“Where did you go to? I was scared?” Aaliyah asked worried. “Where is Malam Bako? Did you see him?”
“It isn’t Malam Bako, our car wasn’t even there.” He replied raking his hand through his hair. “Dad’s car is outside but, I seriously don’t know why it is there.”
“Dad’s car?! But why?” She asked flummoxed.
“I don’t know perhaps, he asked someone to come get us.” He replied nodding. “We are going to have to wait for Malam Bako till then, we won’t be leaving this place.”
“That means dad’s in town. Oh no! This isn’t good.” Aaliyah voiced sweating.
“Hey calm down! Nothing would happen.” He said comforting her.
