ENSIS POV:
The sound of the ascension horn rang through ruins of Polis as I stood with Gaia, Madi and Bellamy, my skin itching from the paint that marred my face in anticipation of the ascension. This moment had been fated to happen for a long time now, I was reminded of Lexa, discussing with her the possibilities that the future held. She said my legacies would maintain peace, but it seemed I was fighting the same battle she was. I could only hope I would bring honour to her memory and to my people. There was so much at stake here and if Octavia managed to wake all of Wonkru would be put at risk and blood would be shed. A true leader should know when to stand and fight and when to retreat. It was the impossible choices that made us great. All I could hope was that my people stood by my choices.
My eyes drawn outside the window to the members of Wonkru surrounding us, holding up the fort. My eyes zoned in on Bellatrix who stood, leading the guard, sword in her hand and gun tucked into the holster, readily waiting for the moment when she would have to use it. In truth, I hadn't wanted this life for her, to me it looked like she was destined to guard and protect me always. It was a mistake, getting her involved so heavily in this was a mistake, I saw the pain in her eyes when she was faced with the possibility of fighting Miller. I didn't want her to experience that. I felt a heavy hand placed on my shoulder and I turned, looking up and over to Bellamy.
"She'll be okay," Bellamy assured me with a tight-lipped smile. "She's survived worse than this." I glanced down at his hand and then back to him.
"No one should ever be asked to fight against their loved ones." I sighed, glancing back over to Bellatrix. "I don't want to see her hurting. Everyone is strong, until they're not." I whispered. Each and every one of us had reached our lowest points, but instead of healing, we just kept moving forward, brushing past the pain as if it meant nothing.
"I know what you mean, we all make the mistake of believing that." Bellamy sighed, dipping his head down as I turned away from the window.
"It's time." Gaia said, turning towards me and I sighed, meeting her half-way, sending a comforting smile to Madi before I looked to Gaia. I was becoming everything I never thought I would be. To be admired and respected was something I had longed for most of my life, but I had never believed I'd had the time to achieve either. Living on borrowed time put things into perspective for me. "Jus-de kom emo Heda laik yu jus." (The blood of the Commanders is your blood.) Gaia said, stalking towards me, holding the bowl of my blood in her hands as she stopped in front of me. "Teik Heda gyon op." (The blood of the Commanders is your blood.) she said, dipping her finger into the bowl and reaching out, dragging her finger down my forehead, stopping at the bridge of my nose.
