It was Christmas Eve as the two of us walked alongside on a park path.
“Why are we here again?” I complained, rubbing my hands together, very cold. I couldn't find my mittens from last year, and I wasn't quite privileged enough to buy another pair for myself. I was barely able to pay for the electricity bills ever since the weather had turned cold and I needed to turn on the heat.
“It's supposed to be romantic,” Gong Chan said, “Everyone says that it is!”
“It would be romantic if it wasn't so cold. Oppa, do you ever use your mind?! It's freaking below twenty. Does it look like I can enjoy the view and think it's romantic if I'm freezing?”
Gong Chan frowned, as if suddenly realizing that I didn't have mittens, “Where are your mittens?”
“I don't know,” I said, and he gave me his right hand mitten, “Here you go, so we won't be cold!”
“What do you mean?” I asked curiously, and he entwined his right hand and my left hand together, smiling.
“That's what I mean!” Tristan happily beamed, and I chuckled at how much of a child he was.
We stood there in silence as we watched the serene landscape before us, when Tristan finally turned to me and said the three words I had never expected myself to hear from anyone after my parents' death, “I love you.”
I began to cry, and Gong Chan, being the idiot he was, took it the wrong way.
I said I love you right?” I didn't say I'll kill you right? Oh my god! Why am I so dumb? What did I say?”
I shook my head, smiling through my tears as I embraced the panicking Tristan who was pacing around the riverbank, “I love you too.”
There by the riverbank, we shared our first kiss. For me, it was my first. For him, I am not sure. But it doesn't matter, because it meant a lot to me anyways.
For the first time in my life after my parents left, it felt like I was secure and safe.
