Thankfully, I manage to sit through the entire banquet without getting sick, although I hate that I have to be so far from Tobias. I've gotten used to eating with him every meal.
After James's speech, the rankings appear. I glance toward the middle where I expect to find myself, but when I don't see my name, I keep looking lower and lower until I still can't find my name. Finally, I glance towards the top of the list, and there, next to the number one slot, is my name and picture. I look to see where each of my friends are in the list.
1: Tris
2: Uriah
3: Lynn
4: Marlene
5: Edward
6: Will
7: Christina
8: Michael
9: Gabe
10: Sarah
11: Terreigh
12: Vikki
13: Stone
14: Trent
15: Myra
16: Karri
17: MollyI smile, and Christina reaches across the table to hug me. I'm too distracted to protest against the affection. She laughs in my ear.
Someone hrabs me from behind and shouts in my ear. It's Uriah. I can't turn around, so I reach back and squeeze his shoulder.
"Congratulations!" I shout.
"You beat them!" he shouts back. He releases me, laughing, and runs into a crowd of Dauntless-Born initates.
Will and Christina kiss, a little too sloppily for my taste. All around me is the pounding of Dauntless fists. Then I feel a tap on my shoulder and turn to see Tobias standing behind me. I get up, beaming.
"You think giving you a hug would give away too much?" he says.
"You know," I say. "I really don't care."
I stand on my tiptoes and press my lips to his.
It is the best moment of my life.
As he deepens the kiss, I begin to hear catcalls that sound like Zeke from across the room, and Uriah screams something along the lines of "Get a room!" Why must our friends be idiots?
Even with the sounds of our idiot friends, Tobias and I are lost in our own little world as we continue to kiss until we have to come up for air.
I hear Christina start attempting to chatter in my ear about a wedding, but, thankfully, Tobias and I already made plans with James days ago to have a simple Dauntless wedding tomorrow after we choose our jobs. It'll just be Tobias, James, and I.
"Zeke is having a party tonight to celebrate the new members," Tobias tells me. "Let the other transfers know. It's at his apartment. Wear layers."
He then walks off to his table with Zeke and Shauna leaving me to wonder about his instruction to wear layers. It doesn't take long to tell Christina, Will, Myra, and Edward about the party, but I studiously avoid telling Molly. I don't want to deal with her anymore. A few minutes later, James comes up to me to congratulate me on my rank.
"Meet me in my office tomorrow before the job ceremony," James says before he heads over to Tobias. I wonder what that was about.
Christina drags me back home to help me decide on a decent outfit that will follow Tobias's instructions before we head over to Zeke's apartment. Tobias had told me where it was a while ago, but this is my first time actually going there, so I hope I remember his directions.
We knock on the door, and thankfully I was right as Tobias greets me at the door pulling me into a hug.
Everyone else is already here with a glass of alcohol each. I'm really going to have to get used to seeing people drink liquor all the time. We all sit in a circle in the living room while Zeke announces the game.
"We're going to play Candor or Dauntless," he says with a grin.
A few of the Dauntless-Borns groan at the game that was decided on while the transfers are all confused like I am.
"The game was created by one of the Candor transfers from my year," Zeke says noticing all of the confused looks. "You pick a victim and ask them Candor or Dauntless. If they choose Candor, you ask them a question that they have to answer honestly. If they choose Dauntless, you give them a dare to carry out. If they don't want to answer the question or do the dare, they have to take off one article of clothing not including shoes, socks, or jewelry. Also, when Uriah asks, he asks Dauntless or Pansycake. Pansycake in this instance is the same as Candor."
Now I understand why Tobias told me to wear layers.
"As first ranked, Tris can choose the first victim," Zeke adds after a moment.
I think about it before deciding to torture my best friend.
"Uriah," I say with an evil grin. "Candor or Dauntless?"
Uriah yells his response. "Dauntless! I ain't no Pansycake!"
"I dare you to kiss Marlene."
Tobias chuckles beside me, and I see Zeke and Shauna grin from across the circle of friends.
Uriah shakily stands up and walks over to Marlene before pulling her to her feet. After taking a shakey breath, Uri closes the distance between his lips and Marlene's. There is an audible sigh from one of them before they finally separate with a huge grin on both of their faces. Maybe this will finally get Uri to man up and ask the poor girl out.
Once Uriah has returned to his seat, he glances around the room to decide on his victim. "Lynn, Dauntless or Pansycake?"
"Dauntless," she replies confidently.
"I dare you to go to the infirmary and kiss the first person you see."
Christina stands to follow her as a witness, and they both head out. About ten minutes later, Lynn and Christina return with a smiling Mia.
"You're playing without me," Mia says while glaring at Zeke.
Zeke throws his hands up in mock surrender. "Sorry, Mia. I didn't know when your shift would end." He then turns to Lynn. "Who did you end up kissing."
Lynn's face turns red, but she doesn't answer. Christina simply points to Mia who's smiling triumphantly. Something about that smile gives me the impression that she liked the kiss.
Mia takes a seat next to Lynn, and the game continues.
"Shauna, Candor or Dauntless?" Lynn asks her sister.
"Candor," Shauna answers.
"Our first Pansycake of the night!" Uri yells grinning .
Lynn looks at her older sister before speaking. "Why aren't you drinking?"
Shauna looks over at Zeke who shakes his head. I wonder what's going on. Instead of answering her sister, she removes her jacket. Why doesn't Shauna want to answer the question?
"Four, Candor or Dauntless?"
Tobias looks at his friend as if trying to decide which is the better option to choose. "Dauntless," he finally responds after a few minutes.
"I dare you to play Seven Minutes with Tris."
Tobias takes my hand and walks me over to what I assume is Zeke's bedroom.
"What is Seven Minutes?" I ask as he closes the bedroom door.
"It's called Seven Minutes in Heaven. You spend seven minutes doing whatever you want with the other person."
"Whatever you want, huh?" I ask before reaching up to kiss him.
I drag Tobias to the bed, and we kiss furiously. It takes all of my self control to not remove either of our clothes, and I'm sure that Tobias feels the same. Even though I feel ready physically, I'm not ready mentally or emotionally to do that after what Peter did. I still need more time to heal first.
I'm leaving this here, and I'm not sure if I'm picking up the game from there or having it be the next day. Also, check out my new fanfic "Secret Life of the Abnegation Teenager."
