The walk home from the train is silent, and when we reach the house, mom simply tells me goodnight before heading to her room. I wonder if it's still bothering her about Amar. I can only imagine if something happened to Caleb and how I would feel, so it wouldn't surprise me if that is why she seems distant tonight.
Since I had dinner with Tobias, I go straight to my room to exercise and go to bed.
There is no school the next day, as it is Sunday, so my mother takes me to pass out food to the factionless with her. The motions don't really help me any with the knowledge that I still have to wait almost an entire year before I can see Tobias again, but I can see that mom seems herself again; that is enough for me.
Even though I try not to show how little the work helps, mom still notices and apologizes on our way home.
"I'm sorry if that was too boring for you."
I shake my head at her, "Mom, even though we don'talwaysdo things that Ilike to do, it's nice to get to spend time with you. We only have one year left together before I join Tobias, and I leave you, dad, and Caleb behind."
Mom permits herself a small smile, "I'm glad that there is still a little Abnegation in you. It will serve you well in Dauntless as long as you keep it from being noticed that your intentions are based from here."
I don't fully understand her words, but I feel that they are important and remember them, "Even though they want us to, I will never forget where I come from."
We walk the rest of the way home in a comfortable silence.
My studies help a little with keeping me busy along with my training with Uri. I spend as much time with my family as I can, and soon enough, it's time for me to take the aptitude test.
Before I start the test, I tell the Dauntless woman, Tori, about my plan to join Dauntless, but nothing could have prepared me for what my results turn out to be.
"Your results were inconclusive, but I verbally reportedit as Dauntless," Tori explains to me in a panic after she returns to the room. "You had three results. Dauntless, Abnegation, and Erudite. You're Divergent, Beatrice."
"That's impossibe. No one can have more than one result!" I exclaim.
"It is possible, just very rare, and very dangerous. You can't tell anyone about this, not even your parents."
"Tell Four," I tell the woman. If it's as dangerous as she says, then he needs to know.
"I'm not supposed to divulge your results to anyone," Tori protests.
I sigh, "Tori, if this is as dangerous as you say, then Four needs to know about my results. He'll be able to help protect me?"
Tori still seems uncertain, so I push a little more, "I know that Four is in charge of initiation. We've been together, and I know that he will do anything to protect me. We finally get to be together again, and it will hurt him if something were to happen to me."
Tori nodds, "So you're her? He did say that you were stubborn. I'll tell him, but only because he's my friend, and I don't want to see him hurt."
I leave the room and sit at the Dauntless table next to Uriah. Tomorrow is going to be great.
On Choosing day, I dress like all the other Abnegation children trying to keep my fellow transfers from knowing about my strength until it's time to fight. I don't want to be pegged as a threat too early. Caleb and I take our places in line waiting for our turn to get called.
I look around the room for a familiar face, but the only Dauntless ones I see are Zeke, Hana, and Uri. Where is Tobias?
My search for Tobias causes me to almost miss when dad calls out Caleb's name. Caleb walks forward and takes the knife from his hand. They look each other in the eye for a moment before dad nodds, and Caleb walks to the bowls. I watch him take a deep breath before running the knife along his palm. He will choose Abnegation, I think to myself until the color of Erudite's water is darkened by my brother's blood.
Caleb chose Erudite.
The shock I feel causes dad to have to call for me a few times before I walk forward and take my own knife from him. I smie at my father before walking to the coals and slicing my palm. My blood sizzles on the hot coals for a moment before I take my place behind the rest of the Dauntless. Tobias, here I come.
