A brief history of Uglydolls: David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim met at art college in New York. When Kim had to return to Korea because her student visa expired, the two kept in touch by writing letters to one another. One of Horvath's letters had a doodle of Wage in the margin, and underneath it said, "Working hard to make our dreams come true so we can be together again soon." As a surpise to Horvath, Kim sewed a doll version of Wage and sent it to him as a present. Horvath was really happy with the present and showed it to his friend, Eric Nakamura, who owned the Giant Robot store. Nakamura thought Horvath was pitching an idea for a toy, and ordered some to sell in his store. Horvath wrote to Kim asking her to sew more toys. She made several more doll prototypes (I'm still trying to find what information I can on these), and Horvath set to work writing his first Uglydolls book: Chilly Chilly Ice Bat.
