"What do you mean Covan is missing!?" I blurted out. How they were scaring me but I knew they were overreacting.
"He isn't home, isn't answering his phone since the breakup. We all know how important football is to him and he just didn't bother to even show up. His mother isn't responding either and no one was allowed to speak to the principal," she continued to explain.
"Okay, I'll call you back," I brushed her off and hung up the call. I was about to run out of my room when I froze.
What am I doing?
All I knew was that I had to check the rooftop. But why would I care? I shouldn't. It Covan, the guy who always pisses me off. What if he's in serious danger on the rooftop? What if he's locked out or maybe passed out. That was the pushing point. I grabbed my converse and car keys before sneaking out of the house since eventually, it was nearly twelve am. I needed to stop being so reckless. Now I was sneaking out of the house. Who am I? This better be worth it.
Minutes later I arrived at the diner and was quick to lock my car and race up the stairs. The door was already opened at the top so that eased me a bit. "Covan?" I called out once on the rooftop, scanning the area. My body went into relief mode when I saw him close to the edge, his back leaning against the short wall it had up here. He turned to me and I couldn't read anything from him.
Why isn't he talking? He's supposed to ask me what the hell I was doing here.
The cigarette was flaming between his fingers and that's when I frowned. "You're smoking?" I noticed, walking closer to him. "Yeah, baby. Smoking hot," he joked before taking a swig from the bottle he was tightly holding.
"And drinking," I noted, ignoring him. "Out of y- never mind," he mumbled.
"What are you doing here, Covan?" I sighed, changing the topic. He seemed numb, not showing any emotions while looking at the stars and dark forest."I'm sitting, what does it look like I'm doing? In fact, what are you doing here, miss good girl?" He snapped, looking me dead in the eye and it almost seemed scary. "People are worried about you," I hesitantly say, trying to ignore my harshness. "Missed you at the game. We won by the way," I added. He rolled his eyes and turned back to the stars. "I watched every call as it rang and never answered any," he muttered.
"Are you okay?" I changed the topic. He wasn't okay, that was obvious. "Yes," he lied. "Aren't you feeling cold?" I asked. Without my hoodie, I'd be freezing. Especially at the top of the roof. "Don't have feelings right now, what's with the questions? Just leave," he replied and took his final pull from the cigarette before grinding it on the concrete with his thumb and leaving it there.
