The last few days were rough. Between fielding calls from Mom and Dad, blowing off Harry to spend time with Gram, and Gram not recalling who Emilia was a few times, I was tired. Today Macy was coming by to make some cookies like we used to when Gram would visit in Carolina. We were feeling nostalgic and Emilia said it would be nice for Gram too.
"I sat the butter out to soften." Gram said from the kitchen as I came down the stairs.
"Thank you!" I kissed her cheek. "Macy just pulled in the drive."
"Oh Heavens, I haven't seen her in years." Gram said.
I knew she was wrong but I didn't correct her. Emilia said it's best to just let her be unless it's something that could hurt her. I've learned a lot from Emilia here in the last few days. She's absolutely wonderful.
"I'm here!" Macy said as soon as I let her inside. "Gramma Sue you look gorgeous as ever!"
"Macy dear you're all grown up!" Gram smiled brightly at her. "Come give this old woman a hug!"
Macy hugged Gram and rubbed her back. "I've missed you Gramma Sue!"
"I've missed you too my dear." Gram said letting her go.
We started making dough to freeze. There was only minimal flour fights between Macy and I before we rolled the dough into balls. Then Gram took her medicine and we talked a little about Macy's job.
Gram seemed so proud of her. I hope she's that proud of me too one day. Before I started to feel too sorry for myself Emilia rejoined us and we started slamming out cookies. Gram even laughed at us when we fought over who got to lick the bowl.
"I haven't had this much fun in years." Gram smiled happily. "Paul used to come by and ask me to make him cookies every once in awhile. Is he coming by later?"
I froze. It was like cold water had been injected into my veins. My whole heart shattered as I snapped my head up.
"Who's Paul?" Emilia asked.
"My brother." I choked out. "He's dead."
"Anna!" Macy snapped at me.
"Paul's dead?" Gram looked horrified. "How long?"
"Not long Sue. It's okay." Macy patted her hand on the counter. "Let's get these cookies off the pan and I'll find us a few containers to put them in to keep them fresh."
I felt awful as my long time best friend walked my grandma away from me. I was an awful person. I didn't mean to make her feel bad. Emilia rubbed my shoulder.
"I'm sorry Anna, she didn't mean to upset you." She said.
"I know she didn't." I nodded. "I just miss him so much. It was surreal when she asked about him. I feel awful I just made her feel bad."
