The Truth (part 2)

Brooke jolted awake, almost hitting her head off the glass of the capsule as the warning alarm went off. She opened her capsule door and stumbled out of it, disoriented from hitting her head and just waking up. She clumsily went to her desk and shut the alarm off, pulling up the footage. Her dreariness went away as soon as the security footage came up. Her eyes widened in shock as she watched the horror of animal mutations being handled. She knew that the lab was up to something, but could never imagine something like this.

Turning away from the screen, Brooke planned to get her suit on, but her eyes had stopped on the corner of her desk. Her hands gingerly picked up split pieces of her mask and let it just lay there. She sighed as she thought of how much trouble it had caused her in recent weeks. The thought made her sad and her movements slowed. Shaking the thought away, she set the mask into her capsule. Programming the computer to fix the mask, Brooke turned away from the capsule to focus on the mutations.

The animals weren't just being modified to have other traits of different animals. They were full on mutations. Two-head snakes, lion-cheetah hybrids, even an actual chimera. The horror didn't stop there. Brooke stared in shock as the animals became feral, almost rabid. One lion hybrid tore apart the man trying to feed it. What do they plan to do with them? Brooke wondered.

She couldn't press on the matter at that moment as the computer beeped, her mask fixed. Immediately, she hopped into her capsule to get her suit on. I don't think I want to know what they plan to do with those animals, she thought to herself. I'm just going to need backup.

Bree shook herself awake as her phone buzzed loudly against the glass of her capsule. She became more awake as the screen showed that Brooke needed her. Bree didn't bother getting out of her pajamas as she raced out of her capsule and into the elevator. What she didn't notice was that her frantic movements had woken Chase. He pieced things together and figured that Bree was going to check on Brooke. So, naturally, he followed her. But he took the stairs instead.

Bree burst into Brooke's room, immediately running to the lab. "Brooke, what's going on?"

Brooke cocked a stiff nod to the computers. "Take a look."

Bree did as she was told but sat down in shock at the scene before her. "What...What are they doing to those poor animals?"

"Isn't it obvious?" Brooke snapped. "Clear animal cruelty and illegal mutations. I just don't know what they're going to do with those...those things. All I know is that I have to stop those people from sending those things God knows where to do God knows what. Do I make myself clear?"

Brooke stood over Bree with a determined yet menacing look on her face. It slowly occurred to Bree that the fight between Brooke and Chase the night before took a massive toll on Brooke's personality. Bree thought over her next sentences carefully before speaking up. "Brooke, are you sure you're going to be able to do this right now? With the whole thing with Chase-"

Brooke immediately turned away from Bree in anger. "What happened between me and Chase is my own damn fault. If he wants to be an ass about it, that's his choice. But I won't let it stop me from doing my job. So, either you drop the subject and help me, or you continue to dwell on it and I'll do this on my own."

"I don't think it's a good idea for you to go there on your own. These guys are seriously insane!" Bree stood up as she stood her ground.

Brooke turned back around, new fury in her eyes. "Well I need you here! I need someone to monitor the cameras and keep an eye on everything!"

"I'm not letting you go by yourself!"

"Then we're out of options!"

"I'll go with you." Both girls' heads were turned at the sound of a new voice. Chase had stepped out from around the doorframe as he was listening in the whole time.
