Brooklyn P.O.V
"Guys, I have a bad feeling. Let's get out of here," Bree said. Today, Mr. Davenport and I were putting the rats through the training simulator. Their mission was to interrogate the rebel leader of a gang.
Two rebels, one of them being the rebel leader, came out of nowhere. They were about to hit Bree, but she superspeeded around them. Chase flipped over and started fighting the two before knocking one out and shoving the other to Adam, which happened to be the rebel leader. Adam punched the rebel leader and sent him flying. "Aaaah!"
The three high fived and we brought them out of the simulator. "Adam, that was the rebel leader. The whole purpose of today's mission simulation was to interrogate him," Mr. Davenport said as he held the simulator key.
"I did, and his answer was, 'Aaaaah!'" Adam replied as he flailed his arms. The three got off the simulator platform.
Bree walked over to us. "Hey, next time could you maybe throw in a cute, blue-eyed rebel?" Bree asked us. Mr. Davenport and I stared at her blankly. "What? I'm just sayin'. It's not gonna kill you to add a little somethin'-somthin' for the ladies," she said.
"Step aside amateurs," Leo said. He took a pair of simulator goggles off the console and walked onto the simulator platform. "Go ahead, Big D. Set it to 'awesome'."
I went up onto the platform and took the goggles off Leo. "Leo, these goggles are not a toy," I said.
"Come on! My birthday's coming up—globally known as 'Dia De Leo'," Leo tried to convince us.
"No. We designed the mission simulator to fine-tune their bionics, not to go on 3-D joyrides. Besides, you're not trained for it," Mr. Davenport said. We walked over to another computer and started fine tuning the goggles.
"Well, how about as a birthday gift, you give me a bionic ability?" Leo suggested.
Mr. Davenport and I turned around and looked at him. "Or we could gift-wrap reality and you could play with that for a while," I said as Mr. Davenport walked away with the goggles.
The rats walked over to Leo and I. "So Leo's having a birthday. What are you, like, nine?" Chase asked and I snorted.
"Fourteen," Leo said flatly.
The rats laughed. "No, seriously," Chase said.
"So how are you gonna celebrate?" Bree asked.
"We're all going to celebrate. Every year my mom throws me a big surprise party," Leo said and I nodded.
"Really?" Adam asked.
"Last year, she baked a cake the size of Leo," I said.
"I'm not gonna brag, but I was delicious," Leo said as he walked over to Mr. Davenport, who was at the desk.
"Hey, how come you've never told us about your birthday?" Chase asked me.
I shrugged. "Never been a big deal," I said, not looking at him.
"What? Why?" I didn't answer him and he put his arm around my shoulders. "Brooke? This wouldn't have to do with what you were going to tell me the other day, would it?" I didn't want to answer him.
Thankfully, Tasha came into the room looking excited. "Guess what? I just found out that I won an award for my undercover reporting on expired produce: 'Something in the crisper can kill you'," she said excited.
