I had been in the Devildom for seven months now. My exchange here would be coming to a close in three, and honestly I couldn't be happier. When I first got here, I had nothing but good reviews. The other students were nice to me, I made easy friends with the other exchange students, and the brothers considered me family.Somewhere along the line though, the brothers seemed to just lose interest in me. I didn't enjoy stealing their attention to begin with, it had to be annoying paying constant attention to a helpless human. Even after making pacts with all of them, I still couldn't fully defend myself.
I never would've guessed it was getting to the brothers though, or how much it was pissing them off. That's why it shocked me when they started ignoring me. I'm not talking the childish, silent treatment type of thing. No, I mean completely ignoring my existence. None of them ever glanced my way, they never saved a spot for me when we went anywhere, they never even served me at meals anymore.
I thought I could handle it, I thought I was handling it well. It turns out I wasn't. I hadn't handled anything, I had just bottled everything up. I never expected anyone to notice, so it surprised me when Diavolo invited me to his palace.
"Hello there (Y/N)," Barbatos greeted me at the doors. "Hello Barbatos, I'm here for my meeting with Diavolo," I responded. "I figured, right this way." We walked through the halls of the extravagant palace, and eventually Barbatos began to talk to me. "So how are you (Y/N)? How has everything at the House of Lamentation been?" He asked as we walked. "Good," I lied as I flashed him a small smile. He seemed to look at me with pity as he kept leading us to wherever his lord was.
We came upon two tall wooden oak doors. Barbatos knocked lightly as said, "My lord, (Y/N) is here." "Let them in Barbatos," was heard from the other side of the doors. The butler lightly pushed open one of the doors, and motioned for me to enter. I walked in slowly, shocked to see all the brothers there. They seemed to glare at me, which shocked me since they hadn't even been looking at me lately. One by one they slowly left the office. When it was just us two, Lord Diavolo spoke up.
"Hello (Y/N), how have you been?" "Good," I responded. "Are you, ok?" He asked. The question irritated me slightly. I clearly wasn't ok, and it was such a common question people asked those who were upset. It just seemed like people didn't care when they asked that, like it was a question anyone could ask without actually meaning the words. I was about to respond when I was interrupted. "Look, I know you're not ok, it's been obvious for the past couple of weeks. I won't force you to tell me what's upset you, but I'm here if you feel like you ever need someone to talk to. You can tell me anything."
Diavolo's words had me stunned, no one had ever told me anything like that. Before I knew it, I felt tears streaming down my face. The demon lord stood from his desk as I covered my face with my hands in embarrassment. I couldn't stop the small sobs and whimpers that left my mouth, but I tried to save myself the embarrassment anyway. My crying only worsened when I felt not one, but two pairs of arms wrap around me. I knew the other set belonged to Barbatos, and I just gave in to the two's embrace. "Talk to us when you're ready," Barbatos whispered to me as I was lead to a couch.Once I finally calmed down I began to talk. "I just, I feel like a burden. I always need the brothers help with everything, no matter what it is. I feel bad because I'm taking up a lot of their time, like who would want to spend the entire day babysitting a weak powerless human? The brothers have probably realized by now that I'm just a bothersome human who's not worth their time," I confessed. Barbatos and Diavolo looked at each other, then turned back to me. "You're not a bother (Y/N), they knew what they were signing up for when I told them we'd be having an exchange program."
It took a little more convincing but finally Diavolo and Barbatos had made me feel a little better. It was already late at night, so the two insisted they'd walk me home. The walk was mostly silent except for the sounds of the wind and our shoes hitting the concrete sidewalk. "Thank you for walking me home," I said as the two turned when we reached the door. "Of course (Y/N)," Barbatos responded. "If you ever need anything my palace doors are always open," Diavolo said. I just nodded slightly, then walked through the door.
