Dreaming

I wake up and everything is hazy. I know I'm at Me. Porlyusica's but I have no idea how I got here. Natsu is sleeping on the edge of my bed.

"Natsu?" I ask him.

He sits up abruptly at the sound of my voice.

"Lucy!" He's gleaming. He has huge bags under his eyes but other than that he seems okay, relieved more than anything.

"What happened to me? How did I get here?" I ask.

"What do you remember?"

I go back into my archive of memories and draw a blank. The last thing I remember was Happy telling us about his quest and Natsu eating a sandwich. I can't remember anything beyond that. I remember him saying we could go on a ten year quest but every time I try to remember anything after that, my brain gets more confused on the details.

"Happy was telling us he was going on a quest. You ate a sandwich and then you said something about a ten year quest? I don't remember anything after that. What happened to me?"

He leans back, and I can't tell the look on his face but if I had to put a name to it, it's definitely hurt?

Slumping to his knees and gripping the sides of my bedrails he asks me again, "that's all you remember? Nothing else?" His eyes are hopeful, but also sad.

Is there something I'm supposed to remember? I hope I didn't mess up our quest too bad. If I figured out the solution once to our situation, I'm sure I could do it again. That's the good thing about quests, there's always bread crumbs.

"No? I'm sorry if I messed up. I'm sure if we go back over the notes I took then we can refigure out what I already had. What happened Natsu?"

"Your dad, before he died he partnered with this guild. In exchange for a place to stay, protection and some food, he promised them a celestial wizard to power up some weapon. We got attacked by a couple members of that guild. I, Lucy I'm so sorry. She had mind control and she made me-"

He? Did this? To me?

For the first time I assess the damage. Bandages are wrapped around my head. My ribs are broken. My leg is broken. I have several cuts where they stiched me back up.

"You did this to me?" My voice cracks.

"Lucy I would-" he reaches his hand out to me but I can't help but jerk away from him. He noticed and his voice trembles just the slightest.

"She used mind control. It was like Mr. Cursey but no doll."

"Will she come back for me?" I said scared, "how did I get away?"

"She won't come back. Ever. I made sure of that," he looks away and his voice is low.

"Natsu, what did you do?" I whisper in slight horror. He just shakes his head and stands up to leave the room.

"You need your rest Luce. I'll check up on you later," he gives me a wry smile.

I can hear him outside the door with Ms. Porlyusica.

"She doesn't remember anything at all," he tells her.

"With a head injury like that Natsu, it's a miracle she's even alive. It's a miracle she's even cognitive at all," she tells him.

"Will it come back? How long will this last because, we" his voice starts to break the slightest bit, "I just need her to remember," he finishes with more firmness.

"It might not come back Natsu. Whatever it is, it's probably for the best. Her mind is protecting itself from everything she went through, why would you want her to remember that?"

"It's not that that I want her to remember," he clarifies.

"Then tell her whatever it is. She's still the same old Lucy. Her memory loss only went back a week."

"I'm not the same though. And neither was she before those freaks attacked us," he storms out of the home.

What? What could have possibly happened in the week for me to change oh so much?

Why can't he just fill me in on what happened?

My head is throbbing from all this overthinking and I roll over and fall back to sleep.

I have a weird dream, it's not even that detailed. Just me laying down and Natsu kissing my forehead. That's it. I wake up blushing. But thankfully he's not there.

Wendy comes to visit me, she heals my broken bones but tells me there's nothing she can do about my memory. She fills me in on what everyone is doing at the guild. Cana is seeing Bacchus. Mira got a new demon soul. Elfman and Evergreen are going steady. Levy is having twins, at least that's what Cana's fortune telling is saying. Charle has yet to confirm that future. Erza is still on her quest with Jellal and Wendy has immersed herself with training Sherria in Charles absence. No update on Gray and Juvia yet.

"How's Natsu?" I ask. It's been a few days since the last time I saw him, when he was in my room. Badgering me about my memory.

"He hasn't talked to anyone. He came by the guild that day to talk to Master, he wouldn't say anything to any of us. Then he left," she shrugs, "I'm sure he will be okay. He always is. Don't worry about him. Worry about getting better Lucy," she rests her hand in mine.

"Thank you for coming by, I feel all brand new again Wendy. I'm so Lucky to have a friend like you," I hug her.

The word friend stirs at the back of my mind with familiarity but I can't quite place why.

The more I think about why it seems so important, the more my mind revolts against the idea of filling in the missing blanks.

I can't believe he just left me again, without even saying goodbye. After he promised me, he still did it.

No, Natsu wouldn't break his promises. There's a good reason why he's MIA. Hopefully my memory comes back and I won't have to wonder anymore where he's gone off to.
