That morning, everyone got up and went straight to work again. Ricky was so set on his sign, that he paid no attention to the girls throwing themselves at him. The guards didn't seem so on edge for once, I think they were actually starting to trust being with us a bit more. Of course Liz was flirting with the one guard rather than doing her work and she was really starting to annoy me. I made a bandana out of the cloth from my jackets jean-like material and kept my hair up in its usual ponytail. I took out my mirror and noticed that my wound was still open, so I headed down to the shore. I really needed clean water, but the oceans water would have to do.
I tried to clean away as much sand and blood from the cut as possible before looking at the anitbiotcis in my pack. I found a cream that was supposed to keep away infections and put that on the cut area. I then put my stuff away, got out my knife, and headed to the edge of the woods.
I looked around at the trees, and went to a tree with thick bark that could be torn off in chunks. "What are you doing?" I turned around to see the same little girl from last night standing just a few feet from me. I hadn't even heard her approach me. "Geez you scared me."
I laughed, and when she didn't laugh back, I felt awkward and continued. "Well, it's just a theory that I'm going to test out." I shrugged, and she nodded as she watched me carefully. "What's your name anyways, I never saw you in the halls." I asked, and she wasn't paying attention until I said that, then she looked up. "It's Sage." "Well nice to meet you Sage, did you sleep well last night?" I asked, and she nodded before walking away. She is such an awkward kid!
I had gotten a few thick pieces of bark done, and took a break. I saw Liz grab ahold of one of the guards hand, they were laughing and heading into the woods. It disgusted me that they could even think about having sex when in such a serious situation. "Peter!" I called, and he jogged over to me after putting down the wood he was working on. "Can you and Tiffany fry up some fish? I don't think anyone can work too well on an empty stomach."
He smirked and nodded before getting Tiffany and setting up the stick to roast our food. After a couple of failed attempts, they got a fire going and I couldn't help but smile at how excited they seemed to be from that little amount of victory. It wasn't home, but at least it wasn't a life sentence to solidarity.
I created my own little fire, and started to break the bark into the shape I needed. I then got more bark from the tree, and watched to make sure my fire was still going for when I needed it. "Watcha doing there Sparks?" Asked Ricky as he sat down with his sign and looked at everything I had in amusement. "Well, I figure that bark is kind if solid right? And it, for the most part keeps sap in the trees... So I'm going to get a bunch of sap and burn it onto two pieces of bark to make a flat surface, and the flat surface I will make a roof."
I smiled at my thought and tried to collect sap from the tree. "Say this works.... What will the roof be for?" "Well if I'm making it, I guess my own little hut or a medical storage area, or for our food, or..." "Alright, okay! I get it, stop the listings!" He acted like it killed him, and we laughed together. He looked down at the board and smirked before turning it to face me. He had at least an outline ready to be carved in more on the wood, it read.
"Survival Island, home to the Shark Slayer!"
I laughed at the sign, and he seemed amused by my laughter. "I love it!"
