Question of the Week:
This week's question was submitted by neonkiwiii.
How was the imagery in your partner's chapters? Was it vivid and engaging? Did it engage your five senses? What was your favorite use of imagery in the chapters you read?
~~Imagery~~
I bet you've heard this term being thrown around a lot in the wattpad comment section. When someone mentions imagery, they're talking about descriptions that engage our senses.
Now, in my experience, wattpad writers tend to rely heavily on visual imagery, but to get a better effect of immersion, it's important to engage the 5 senses: sight, smell, hearing, feeling, tasting.
An okay example of a description:
Lily ate a strawberry. It was delicious.A more immersive description, using imagery:
Lily bit into the small, red fruit. The strawberry's sweet juice gushed out and rolled over her dry tongue, making her moan in delight.Whenever you feel your description is a bit stale or plain, place yourself in your character's shoes and engage their five senses. Would their smell be heightened in this scene? Or maybe they can focus on their hearing?
Search for words to describe sounds or scents when writing. There are tons of websites with word-lists to help you out. Going into specifics with how things taste, sound, feel, etc, can really take your writing to a whole other level.
Here's a website where you can learn more about imagery.
