Chapter 23

Dark hallways were all good and fair, Jace thought, but they were no match for the gloomy feeling of hallways with just a tint of witchlight- much like the winding hall that lead to the main room- where he had left the book.

Everyone seemed to have retired to a room, it was still hours until dawn. The book felt heavier when he picked it up and still gave the impression of a brick as he carried it quietly to the library where Clary had fallen asleep with Charlotte in her arms.

Before he had ignored the book almost completely, wrongly thinking if he didnt pay attention in that moment that the book would not bother him later. Just feeling the spine- the fact that just flicking his wrist would flip the cover of the book- brought a hum of uneasyness to his spine.

The book felt like an anvil. Something someone could break him with- but only the right person. Most people dont know how to pick up the anvil- but the right people can make it hurt.

It felt dirty to be going behind Clarys back- to be doing this while she was sleeping even if she were only just feet away.

He brought his stele in a rushing moment- but his arm jerked fast to the right.

He tried again, and it jerked up.

To the Left.

Down.Up.Right.Right.Left.Up.

His arm was steady- he knew what the rune looked like.

But the ink black rune doesnt take shape. The lock stays secure; almost laughing at him.

Whats the point of the book if I cant use it?
