I grew up in the poor part of town and made do with anything I could scavenge. I was sold by my parents at the age of 10 to a drug dealer so they could get their next fix. They were never seen by me again and I never mourned the loss of them. To them I was an inconvenience that they did not want. An extra mouth to feed and spend money on. That was money they would have rather used to buy drugs.

My name is Alena Mathews and this is my story. When my parents sold me to their drug dealer I cursed them and hoped they died from the crap they were using. They didn't care. All they were concerned with was getting their next fix. They never looked back as they walked off into the night.

Aramond was a cruel and worthless excuse for a human. He only kept me until he could find a buyer for me. He sold me off three days later to a scrap dealer for 13000 credits cash. I at first thought the scrap dealer was a drunken fool who rarely stayed sober. He ran a scrapyard that sold everything from hover bike parts to old robotic units that few wanted anymore.

I tturned out that I was wrong about him. He was smart and the drunken fool was a part he played to keep people from guessing just how smart he really was and grouping him with the Russians that sold out the Earth to aliens. His name was Uri Gregerin and he was originally from Russia. He had moved to the west with his family when he was 16and helped to run their scrapyard.

Uri never married and never had children. His family died when he was 23and he took over the business from them. Since everyone thought he was a drunken fool they never teased him about his country of origin since he was obviously a drunken old fool too stupid to think of selling out to aliens. To make a profit he bought, sold and traded almost anything in the way of scrap parts. I was given a warm place to stay and chores to do while learning everything I could about how the different machines worked.

Uri was nice to me from the very beginning and was extremely intelligent. He had masters degrees in quantum physics and in quantum mechanics as well. He had bachelors degrees in computer engineering and mechanical engineering as well. He had an IQ that was off the charts and loved to tinker with the items in his yard.

I thought for sure that he wanted me for sex or a slave but he treated me with great kindness. I had a room and he taught me everything he could about everything I was curious about. I came to eventually trust and love him as if he were my own father. He deserved more respect than he got but his persona of a drunkard allowed him to sucker customers while they had their guard down.

I found that my mentor would even buy old military machines that were supposed to be melted down into ingots. He never melted these machines down and merely tucked these way in the back of the scrapyard near the radiation barrier. No one wanted to go that far back as he lied and told everyone that the electromagnetic barrier was not all that stable anymore.

I learned everything I could about how all the machines worked and what could be used to fix other machines. I was encouraged to tinker as much as I wanted and warned at the same time to be careful near the back of the yard where the old military scrap was stored as the barrier tended to mess up un-shielded electronics devices and erase their chips.
