(A/N: before you comment anything, remember that the timeline is messed up. Jacques never came to Village of Fowl Devotees, so the kids don't know about VFD. This also means Jacques never died, meaning the kids haven't been framed for murder.)
The children rode for a long time in the firetruck. Jenny eventually cried herself to sleep, leaving Wyatt and Francine to talk alone.
"I can't believe Pheonix would betray us like that." Wyatt said aloud.
"His family was in danger." Francine reminded Wyatt. "You would do the same if you were in his shoes."
"No I wouldn't." Wyatt shook his head. "I would prefer death over betraying my friends."
Francine sighed. "Well, Pheonix did both. And there's nothing we can do about it."
They were interrupted by the firetruck stopping. Violet and Isadora hopped out of the car.
"We need gas." Violet told Wyatt and Francine, who looked confused.
"But it's empty." Isadora said, from her place next to the gas pump.
"Great." Wyatt said. "Olaf's after all of us, and we've run out of gas."
Jenny woke up, and the others told her what was going on.
"Why don't we, what's the word, hitchhike?"
"No." Klaus told her sternly. "That would put other people in danger."
"Then why don't we go inside and ask if there's gas?" Jenny pointed to Last Chance General Store.
"Good thinking." Duncan turned to the group, taking charge. "How about the Baudelaires go inside while the rest of us keep watch?"
Everyone nodded. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny walked into the general store. The rest of the kids stayed by the firetruck. Jenny found a pen and used it to cross off Pheonix's face on the polaroid picture with a giant "X".
"Why are you crossing off his face?" Francine asked the young girl.
"Because I don't want to l think about how he betrayed us every time I look at this picture." Jenny answered, not looking away from the picture.
Francine nodded, knowing better than to ask any more questions. At that moment, the Baudelaires exited the general store.
"Bad news." Violet started. "There's no gas."
"Perfect." Wyatt groaned. "What do we do now?"
A loud rumble was heard. The kids turned their heads to see a big van drive up to the general store. The letters "V.F.D." were painted along the side. Duncan turned to Jenny.
"We may be hitchhiking after all."

The people in the van were more than happy to let all the kids climb aboard their van.
"Where are we going?" Isadora asked the man with a beard.
"To Heimlich Hospital." he answered. "To sing to the sick patients."
"What does VFD stand for?" Wyatt asked.
"Volunteers Fighting Disease."
"How do you fight disease?" Francine asked.
"By singing." a woman told them, like it was obvious.
"I don't think that's how it works." Jenny said slowly.
Just as the man with a beard was going to answer, the van stopped and everyone piled out. The kids stared at the hospital. Half of the hospital was finished, but the other half was not.
