Another thirty minutes.
I hear the opening of the door, and I spin around to get a swift look at who it is. Sterling. He must have come to see his mother. I turn back around to continue my work. At least I have someone to talk to. "Goodmorning. Eat breakfast?"
"Yeah..." Is all he can say. He must be scared for his mother.
"She'll be fine," I say cold-heartedly. I didn't mean for it to come out that way, but its true. She's not going to die during the tests. That's kind of what we're trying to prevent. He only nods at me, and crosses his arms as he makes his way in my direction. I can't help but watch him, and try to imagine him as Newt, watching me through the window as I lay twitching repeatedly. I turn back to my screen to observe. The Flare still fights its way, deep into her brain. I feel shivers over power my body as I watch the brain activity. I start to hope that Sterling doesn't know what it all means.
He walks up so close to the window, that I can see the fog from his breath disappear and reappear on the glass. His mom twitches as she lay with her head on the table, arms dangling to her sides.
"What's she dreaming about?" How am I supposed to know?
"I don't know."
"Then what's the point?"
I take a deep breath, "I study her brain activities, not her dreams."
"Why make her sleep? Why not just do the tests while she's awake?"
I almost roll my eyes, but I stop myself. His tone may sound rude, but he's just curious. Besides, I wouldn't want anyone to treat Newt like that.
"Because she needs to be able to discern whether it's a dream or not. That will train her to know she's in a dream when she is, therefore, control her emotions."
He doesn't respond, just stares through the window. He doesn't eveen ask why his clone is in there. I look back down at my computer. This is so boring. No signs of the Flare. She must be waking up. She sits up so fast, her chair scoots back.
She stares at her son. I swiftly look down at my computer, and type:
I have to do this. She shakes her head, "No, no! I know you're still in there!"
I make him pull out a knife, and stand out of his chair. She screams, and jumps back, but trips over the chair behind her, landing flat on her back.
Stop fighting me.I make him walk forward, and stand over her. She scrambles backwards as she holds one of her hands out, as if to keep him away. He continues to walk towards her.
She finally reaches the wall, and curls into a ball. I select finish on the computer, and it takes her at least three minutes to look up. She searches the room, then looks at the one sided window. I speak into the mic once I figure out what to say, "Congratulations on your first day of training," great, now I sound just like Joshua. She stands to her feet.
"So I'm done?"
"For today. Go get some lunch. I will be seeing you in the morning."
As soon as she enters in through the door, Sterling grabs her into a hug. I begin to submit the results as they leave the room. I wish I were fighting. This shucks. I hear the door slide open, but I don't turn around to see who it is as I type on my computer. It must be Joshua.
