JACK

Annabeth laughed and told Jack that he just had to touch the tip. Jack did, expecting to be pricked, but instead the glowing sword shrunk back into a pen. He shoved in his back pocket and shrugged. The sword had felt so secure, so familiar in his hands, that he almost missed holding it. When he fought the girls, it was like they were in slow motion. He had known instinctively what to do. It was strange.

Annabeth looked at him with new respect, he could tell. He didn't know how, but he was glad. He caught her throwing impressed looks his way; he could tell she didn't get impressed easily.

Jack was caught in his own thoughts for a long while, until Annabeth whistled at him and waved her hand in front of his face. Jack startled.

"Hey, are you listening?" Annabeth laughed.

"Sorry, I guess I was lost in thought. Hey, since I won, can you stop bothering me about sleeping on the beach? How'd you even find out?"

"Oh, ya know... I have my sources," Annabeth raised an eyebrow, and both of them started to laugh. When it died down, Annabeth continued- "As I was saying, while you were obviously not listening, is are you participating in capture the flag today? You're on Hermes, which is always against Athena. I'm so going to beat you."

Jack laughed, and promised to participate in the game she mentioned. He didn't explicitly know what it was, but figured that you just captured a flag, as suggested in the name. He waved her on, heading back to the Hermes cabin to hopefully meet a couple of his cabin-mates, when he was pulled aside.

A dagger was held against his throat by an unknown attacker; Jack didn't panic. He had a feeling he'd been in this situation before.

Jack grabbed the wrist and twisted it, hearing a grunt in pain as the attacker dropped the dagger. Jack caught it easily, and held the point to the person's throat.

The person held his hands up in surrender and chuckled. He was male, with cropped dirty blond hair and eyes like Annabeth's, but not as grey. More of a blue-grey.

Jack lowered the dagger and tossed it aside. He stuck his hands in his pockets, and studied the person. His eyes held intelligence, and his stance and build suggested he was a great fighter.

He blinked. Where did those thoughts come from?

The boy held out his hand. He was only a bit shorter than Jack.

Jack hesitantly shook it, and the person laughed heartily.

"I'm Malcom, Annabeth's brother. I had to make sure the person she was hanging with was worth it, didn't I?" His eyes went from full of mirth to hard.

"I hear that you're Jack. Listen close, ok? Annabeth hasn't looked this happy or even sounded this happy since her boyfriend's death. You are not going to ruin it, hear me? Or else you'll have us to deal with." Malcom's eyes glittered with malice, and Jack knew it wasn't an empty threat.
