"Today's a good day for you to observe. They have a practice match with Nekoma. One of the players really wanted to see Hinata again, so their coach finally agreed to come all the way here."
They have a practice match just because someone wanted to see the boys? That's honestly really cute. I know the boys have a special type of relationship with Nekoma, from what my brother has told me, but I wasn't expecting this.
"Do they always look like that for just a practice match?" I looked to the net in front of me and saw the boys fly up in the air.
"Here I come!" I hear Ryu yell. He hit the ball with immense power. He hit the ground across hard and as soon as his feet connected with the ground again. He took off his shirt and waved it in the air. "I'm so amazing!" He yelled. Noya started yelling along with him.
"Ryu, stop yelling! You too, Noya!" I yelled over them. Daichi glanced over in my direction. "Thank you. They barely listen to me anymore." Noya pouted, and Tanaka put his shirt back on. "Such a buzzkill." He muttered, and I rolled my eyes.
"Looks like shorty over there is the only one who can reel in Tanaka and Noya." Tsukishima motioned my way.
"Shutup, Tsukishima. She has a name." Ryu came to my defense and stalked up to him. I noticed Noya sneaking up behind him and jumped up onto his back. He grabbed the band of his sports glasses and threatened to snap on the back of his head. "Be nice." He ordered.
I felt the heat rise to my neck. I rubbed my fingers in my palm, feeling them get a bit clammy. I don't get to see him very often. Those very few seconds in the hall are all I get.
He looked like such a kid with Nishinoya playing around with his sports glasses. It was something I didn't get to see in the few seconds I walked past him in the halls. He rarely smiles, but here it seems a bit different.
"Nekoma is about 20 minutes away." Kiyoko announced, and the coach clapped his hands. We all huddled around him, and he was discussing last-minute details. Making sure everyone was on the same page. I scanned the line and locked eyes with Tsukishima. My eyes widened, and I looked back down to the floor.
Why am I hiding my face? His gaze was so intense. He didn't even stop looking at me when we made eye contact.
My only job this time was to keep track of Nekoma's score. It seemed easy enough, so I didn't complain. I sat down and threw my head back, and closed my eyes. How could they do this for so long? I'm already tired, and I'm not even the one practicing.
"Hey! You're Tanaka's sister, right?" The voice sounded like it belonged to Hinata. I opened my eyes, and he was walking up towards me with Kageyama not far behind him.
"Tanaka doesn't talk about you, so we just wanted to make sure." I nodded and glanced over at Ryu, who was offering to help Kiyoko with carrying some chairs. "You guys don't look or act anything alike." Kageyama blurted out. "Kageyama!" Hinata elbowed Kageyama sides slightly.
I smiled at his little outburst. "No, we really don't. Unlike that loyal man over there." I pointed at Ryu. Bad timing, he was grappling his hand and yelling, "Noya! Our hands brushed!" Noya jumped in joy and tried touching Ryu's hand. "Don't touch me! Her print will leave!" He yelled.
I laughed a bit more. "Unlike that, I pick and chose where I let loose." Hinata smiled, making Kageyama blush slightly.
"Yes, nothing alike. But you're here, so that must mean you kinda like volleyball." I nodded my head again and stuck my hands under my thighs. "I do. I like watching you guys play. I've always come to my brother's games, but it's so different now. I fell in love with watching the determination you guys have. I've never felt so passionate about anything." I looked up at Hinata and Kageyama.
"Don't worry. That moment comes for everyone. One day something will click in your brain, and you'll stand there thinking. This is it. This is what I am meant to do." Hinata let out a small laugh. "I sounded super cheesy, right!" His laugh gained some volume, causing me to let out a tiny laugh along with him. I glanced to Kageyama, who was again blushing, and looked in the opposite direction.
"Nekoma is here!" Coach yelled. I watched as Kageyama's gaze unfocused off Hinata, and he ran to the door to welcome their guests. Kiyoko motioned me to follow her, and I did as I was told.
Both teams stood in lines facing one another. We all shook hands and were then dismissed shortly after. Kiyoko had to go with Coach, and I stood there alone. I looked around for my brother so that I wouldn't be alone.
I didn't always mind being alone, but I felt like the odd one out like this.
"Woah. A cute new manager. Go ask for her number!" I heard faint voices behind me and got even more nervous. I had always seen Kiyoko deal with guys asking or talking to her, but I never expected it to happen to me.
"Hey!" Someone called out, and I froze where I stood.
"Are are you new to Karasuno?" I looked up at the boy in front of me. He had a shaved sides with a blonde middle mohawk. He looked similar to my brother. "Yes. I am. I'm just here for today." I whispered back, and my hands naturally fell to the hem of my skirt.
"Could you give me your number? We will start seeing each other often because of these games, so that it would be nice!" He seemed just as nervous as I was. His fingers fiddled the phone in his hand.
"Ah. I'm sorry. I don't give that out." I apologized properly and turned to walk into the gym. "Oh, really? Maybe your email then?"
"Maybe some other time. I don't have my phone on me." I said a bit louder trying to regain control over the situation.
Ryu appeared from what seemed nowhere and removed his tight grip from my arm. "What's up, bro!" My brother pushed me behind him and let out a sly smile. "Let's not re-hatch this fight, alright? Let's keep my sister off your list." Ryu always tried to intimidate others, but he was just a huge softie. It was slightly amusing to see him try and scare someone.
"That's your sister? You guys don't look a lot alike. I had no idea!" He whined out. Ryu didn't seem too amused. He looked behind and stared me straight in the eyes. "Go into the gym. The match will start soon enough."
I slowly nodded and walked away. Ryu and the other guy started laughing in no time. They seemed to be good friends. Maybe it was just a misunderstanding, but I did wish he had accepted my no from the start.
"Hey! Y/N! Are you okay?" Before I could step into the gym, Hinata's voice erupted behind me. "Huh?" I turned around to face him. "Tsukishima saw that whole thing. As soon as he did, he went to look for Tanaka. He didn't want to at first, but we convinced him to."
Did he go to look for my brother for me? Was he worried about me?
No, he was definitely worried about me.
"Oh." I managed to let out. "Yeah, that was pretty weird, seeing Tsukishima all worried. He has no other emotions other straight-faced or annoyed." He impersonated Tsukishima in the best way possible. "Are you okay, though?"
"Yes, I am okay. My brother handled it already." Hinata let out a toothy grin, nodding as he walked back his little circle of friends from both schools.
I watched as he left and caught the eyes of Tsukishima. He was staring intensely at me. Why's he always looking at me now?
He doesn't even stop when I notice.
I tore my eyes away from his and felt my heart skip a beat.
