Kenma awoke slowly, eyes still full from the vivid night of crying. But, he didn't wake up in the same grassy plane where he entered his slumber. Kenma sat up, trying to see while his still-delicate eyes adjusted to the low lighting. But he didn't need to see much before he realized where he was. He had spent a lot of time at this place. He recognized the smell of a certain black-haired male's cologne immediately. That god-awful smell Kenma had told him to get rid of so many times, but he never did. Kenma was suddenly grateful for it. Kenma could sense a pair of eyes peering at the back of his head from the doorway behind him. He slowly rotated his body to see the familiar male who stood at 6 feet 1 inch with black hair that seems to always be standing on edge.
Kenma's best friend Kuroo Tetsurō, in all his glory, was standing in the doorway, silently examining him. Kuroo walked into the room holding a glass of water and some toast. Kuroo knew that Kenma didn't usually eat much in the mornings but he thought it would be good for his stomach. Especially after how he had found Kenma last night in the field.
"Why am I here?" Kenma asked and he took the water from Kuroo, holding it still in his hands, not drinking any. "How did I get here? I fell asleep-" Kenma cut himself off. He looked up at Kuroo who wore a subdued look. "You found me there, didn't you," Kenma pressed, his voice only slightly above a whisper. He was embarrassed and ashamed of himself.
Kuroo, one of his best friends, whose opinion of him mattered to Kenma more than anyone else's, saw him have a full breakdown over someone of his past. Kuroo had to have carried him back to his house and take on the burden of making sure Kenma was ok. Kenma hated it. He was so weak that Kuroo had to take care of him. Kenma knew he should be grateful to Kuroo more than anything but he couldn't let go of the memory of the way he was acting that night. He let himself be vulnerable and only trouble had come of it.
"I'm really sorry for making you do this," Kenma stood and bowed. "I was too weak to take care of myself and I put my burden on you. If you even need anything from me, I will do it. Thank you and I'm sorry once again," Kenma kept his head down, waiting for Kuroo's response.
But what Kenma wasn't expecting was the feather-light touch of familiar fingers under his chin. He didn't expect Kuroo to lift his head and force their eyes to connect. He didn't expect what Kuroo was about to do. His surprise suddenly turned to a split second of fear that was soon conquered by warmth.
Kenma was shrouded by warm comfort. The comfort he thought he could only receive from one person. Kenma wrapped his arms around the man who had embraced him so tightly and his vision blurred once again.
Kuroo pulled away and faced Kenma, keeping him close. He swiped a falling tear off the smaller man's cheek and spoke in a calm and quiet tone, hoping to not break the small boy.
"Shhhh don't cry." Kuroo wiped the pad of his thumb against Kenmas check again, catching another salty droplet. "Can you tell me what happened?"
Kenma nodded into Kuroo's shoulder. "Hinata chea-cheated. I walked into the room and he was underne-" Kenma was cut off by a harsh sob. Kuroo whispered more sweet nothings into his ear, encouraging him to keep going. Kenma took a deep breath.
"He was lay-laying on the bed and Kageyama was on top of-of him and kissing him. he smiled. Hinata was- he was smiling," Kenma sobbed harder, if possible. Kuroo's vision flared red and heat rose through his body. But his rage quelled when Kenma asked the question he didn't want to hear.
"Why did he do it, Kuroo? Was I not good enough? Did he hate me? Why? Why?!" A dangerous concoction of rage, frustration, and helplessness rose through his body and settles into his fists. He pounded onto Kuroo's chest, letting out all the anger he'd pent up. But Kuroo stood there and took it, he knew it's what Kenma needed. He could do this; he had to be strong for Kenma.
"I'm sorry Kenma. You never deserved this," At Kuroos words, Kenma's fists slowed and stopped against the man's firm chest and he broke down again. His knees buckled but Kuroo caught him and held him up in a hug. Kuroo slowly moved to the bed and laid him down, staying with him.
He wept for the memories of Hinata and their time together. He cried at the thought of being too weak and the fact that he didn't deserve Kuroo's help. He cried for what seemed like eternities. But even still, the tears never stopped. The last thing Kenma remembered was being lifted off his feet by Kuroo's steady arms and being put into the bed as he became surrounded by an accumulation of blankets. He remembered Kuroo staying with him, playing with his hair just as he knew Kenma liked it until he fell asleep.
Kuroo stayed there with Kenma, even after his breathing steadied and his senses dulled, as much-needed sleep supplanted his consciousness. Kuroo stayed by Kenma's sleeping body and watched Kenma's face relax. A look of pity and pain contorted Kuroo's face. Kuroo hated seeing his friend like this. He hated not being able to do anything. Kenma constantly blamed himself for everything and never let himself walk away innocently. Kenma may not show it but Kuroo knew the struggles he felt every day. Kenma believed everything bad that happened around him was his fault. Kenma never understood that he didn't need to be so harsh on himself. Kuroo had tried to show him that copious amount of times, but Kenma never listened. He pretended to but never allowed himself to truly believe in Kuroo's' words.
Kuroo stood and checked the clock, reading 2:00 AM. He decided to spend the night in the guest bed, seeing as how Kenma was currently sound asleep in his. He turned to face Kenma one last time for the night.
"He doesn't deserve your heart Kenma Kozume. You are too precious a person to be hurt like this by a lowlife like him. You deserve someone better. Someone like...." Kuroo trailed off in quick realization. He brushed the thought from his head, thinking it impossible. There was no way he could feel that way. With a few long, silent strides, Kuroo arrived in the guest room, and with even fewer steps, his body collided with the bed. He hadn't bothered to change before letting himself fall on top of the white sheets.
Sleep well, Kozume. You need it. Was the last thing Kuroo could think before being swallowed by fatigue.
