The next morning, the couple sat in the car after saying their goodbyes to Diana.
"Are you seriously going to stay and investigate a murder that happened 24 years ago?" Liz groaned.
"Ellie, you don't have to stay with me. It's something I need to do. I told you, I saw my dad in the dream last night."
She sighed. "No, I do need to stay with you. I'm your wife, I need to make sure you're not getting yourself into some dumb shit." A beat of silence. "Fine, I'll help. But only if when we're done we agree to let it go, no matter what the outcome is."
"Deal." Spencer adorned a small smile, pecking the brunette's lips before starting the car.
They reached the hotel the team was staying at, saying their goodbyes and promising they'd be back in a couple of days before driving to the police station and approaching an officer. "Hi, I'm Special Agent Elizabeth Reid, this is Dr. Reid, we're with the FBI." She flashed her credentials. "I'd like to see everything you have on the 1984 murder of a boy named Riley Jenkins."
"Just a second."
"Thanks." The officer left abruptly, returning with a box in his hands.
"It was a rough one." His voice was gruff as he plopped the box down on a desk with a loud 'bang' that didn't seem to faze the police station. "Did you work the case?"
"Yeah. I was 3 or 4 blocks away when the call came in on the radio. My first kid. You don't forget those."
"Were there any suspects?"
"The family, initially. A dad, an older brother."
"Makes sense. I heard the boy was found in his own basement, right?"
"Yeah. After a while, the family got defensive, stopped cooperating. A bit like the, what's her name? The Jon-Benet case, I guess. I never liked them for it, anyway. I always figured it was somebody outside the home. What's the bureau's interest in the case?" Liz cut in before Spencer could answer.
"Research. Is this everything?"
"There might be another box down in records."
"I'd like to see it all, if you don't mind." The officer nodded, leaving and returning minutes later with another box. The drive back to the hotel was quiet.
They approached their hotel room, both boxes in Spencer's arms as they froze when hearing the sound of the TV. "Did you leave the TV on before going to see your mom?" She whispered.
"No, and that sounds like a soap opera. I think you left it on."
"I haven't watched my stuff yet." Liz grabbed her gun, aiming it ahead of her as she slowly opened the door, almost pulling the trigger on Rossi and Morgan. "I almost shot you idiots! What are you guys doing here?"
"Hey, what does it look like we're doing?" Morgan gestured to the TV.
"Breaking into our room and watching 'The Young and the Restless'. Give me the damn controller, I haven't gotten to this episode yet!" She shrieked.
"Aren't you supposed to be on the plane back to DC?" Spencer set his stuff down, taking Liz's purse and putting it down. "You're supposed to be hanging out with your mom, and you're not."
"That's what I said." The girl grumbled. Morgan pointed to the boxes of case files.
"Riley Jenkins?"
"No, that's not- That's not why we're actually here." Spencer stuttered, making Liz mentally facepalm. "Reid. I don't think you're spending a second honeymoon lying about being with his mom while you blissfully look at romantic case files. Who do you think you're talking to? I know what this has been doing to you." Both men stood up.
