CHAPTER 20

(MIKAEL’S POV)

“I’m very much sorry I mistook you for someone long dead.” Her eyes looked really apologetic.

“No harm done, Ms.—”

“Darcy, Darcy Gibbins. Uhm, I reckon I haven’t introduced myself yet. I’m Anais Mikael Luther.” I gave her a smile.

“Anais? Sounds terribly delicious.” She chuckled lightly, her laugh lines are making themselves visible.

“It’s my mother’s favorite cookie flavor.” I remembered how every Saturday morning; mother would make a batch of her favorite cookies. I remembered how her eyes would twinkle in delight—then I felt a pang of nostalgic feeling. I had to divert the topic before I start to cry and blabber about how I miss home. “So, you live here alone?”

“Yes,” She poured me her honey smelling tea. “I moved here 34 years ago after my husband and only daughter died in a car accident.” Though the smile on her face was still there, the light in her eyes, on the other hand, dimmed.

“I-I’m sorry, I didn’t know that you lost that much.”

“It’s alright,” she shook her head.  “Besides, that was a long time ago already.”

“But you haven’t moved on yet.” It wasn’t an assessment, it was a fact.

She looked at me to the eyes then she eagerly leaned closer to me.

“You seem bothered dear. Care to tell me why?”

“I kinda miss my b-boyfriend,” Who was taken by a psychopathic vampire and is nowhere to be found. Intriguing isn’t it?

“Where is he?” Even she got intrigued. Guess I need to start filtering out my anwers.

“I-I don’t know actually. He sort of l-left.”

“Well,” she snorted lightly, startling me for a second. “I hope he did not leave for another girl.” She looked disgusted, making me smile then eventually giggled. She joined in the laughter and for the first time—I had my first real laugh after days of moping around.

“So what brought you here?” she asked after recovering on the lingering giggles.

“Sightseeing. I’m new in this town.” That was true. Most of it.

She seemed delighted by my answer. “Good to see youngsters taking interests in old places,” she sighed then as if she remembered something important, her face turned serious. “I must say, you look exactly like Ainsley.”

 “Really? So you’ve seen Ainsley?”
