"Chase... you can't keep letting him pull you in like that.. not after what happened the last time." Kiira spoke softly. Chase sighed, as they sat around the small table on his back porch, hidden from the light breeze by the house and the awning. "I know Kiira. I've been trying to avoid him. I just.. I didn't see it coming this time.". "I'm just worried, ya know, that ... the next time.. one of you is going to get hurt bad. I really don't care if it's him, he could be on fire and I wouldn't piss on him to put it out, but.. he's a coward and ... his guys.. they just..." he saw her concern, and leaned back, giving her a crooked grin "no worries Kiira... it's like I always say.. no such thing as a fair fight.". She gave him her mother hen look, pursing her lips "See... that's what I mean.. I know you Chase.. I know how you get.. and it's even worse when you feel like you're protecting someone... Chase.." he leaned forward "Kiira.. I'm not going to run away from them.. some people.. won't be avoided.. I'm not going to go looking for trouble, and I'll try to stay away, but... I'm not going to back down... not from them."
She shook her head "Stubborn ass... I don't wanna see you get hurt again.". He laughed "That makes two of us." "You know what I mean.". He put his feet up on the extra chair, shaking his head "Kiira... it'll blow over... sooner or later.. it'll be fine.". At the word 'fine', she realized that was his code for 'I'm done talking about it', and she didn't want to push him. She had made her point, and he had heard her. She knew that he didn't want to fight, and he would do what he could to avoid it. She grinned, shaking her head a little at the thought of him and Devyn in the waiting room. "Ok.. Soooooo... what happened in Mr. Carraway's office?". He looked up grinning "I declared my undying, heartfelt devotion and she melted in my arms like butter... then we made mad passionate love on Mr. Carraway's desk.". She looked at him with annoyance "You're an idiot... this is why you don't have friends." she giggled. He laughed at her catch phrase. "I know.. you're the only one dumb enough to take that position."
She laughed, punching his leg "I'm serious Chase, ya big dummy, did you talk to her at all? I know Mr. Carraway likes to make you wait out in the waiting room forever... surely to God you didn't just sit there the whole time playing with your fingers.". He looked at his fingers, that he had just been playing with absentmindedly, quickly putting his hands to his sides, then looked back at her. "Yes... I spoke to her." "Well God bless the poor unfortunate souls... Jesus Chase.. see? Did sheeee... bite you?" she giggled. "Oh... I could tell that she wanted too.." he joked "after all... how could she resist all this?" he laughed mockingly as he rubbed his chest. She grinned, taking his kidding in stride... "Alright... Alright... smart ass... spill it..."
He smiled, thinking back to the awkward conversation in the waiting room "well... we just.. kinda... talked.. like normal people.. if there is such a thing. She apologized for the trouble.. I told her that she was an idiot.. Then" "Hold the phone! You did not spend your first conversation... telling her that she was an idiot? Please tell me you're lying to me right now?". He shook his head "Ok, well, I didn't actually call her an idiot.. I told her she couldn't blame herself for Alex, and that she shouldn't have wounded Mr. Carraway's pride like that, because he wasn't going to listen anyway.". "Oooh.. ok.. well, I guess that's not so bad. Then what happened?" "Well, I went in for my 'you're a bad egg' speech and when I opened the door, she jumped a little, so, I put my hand on her shoulder, and she put her hand on mine... and .. kinda smiled at me..". He blushed a little, looking down at his hand "Oh dear god... Chase... you've got it bad hun....". He looked up "She's going to be the death of me Kiira... but god.. it'll be the best death ever.".
She leaned back in her chair, putting her feet up on his legs, crossing her arms, grinning at him. "Ok, dummy, so... the homecoming dance is only a few weeks away.. Me and Ethan are going, Natalie is going if her boyfriend can get off work, Lenora is going, but if she's still hanging on Alex's beltloop, she's not coming with us. You are going...." "um.. I never said I.." she interrupted him "shut up.. you're going.. the question is.. are you going to just come hang out with us.. or are you gonna grow a pair and ask her to go?". He looked at her, pretending to be shocked.. "Nice... grow a pair huh? ... look.. I have barely even spoken to her yet.. How am I supposed to ask her to Homecoming, when she barely knows my name? Come.... oh wise one.... enlighten me in the ways of wooing a beautiful female.".
