*chapter 16 is dedicated to my desert rose, Taelor*
Devyn ushered Chase into the living room, bringing a couple glasses of water and some chips. They sat in an awkward silence for a couple of minutes, still getting used to each other's presence, sitting on opposite ends of the couch, until she finally broke the silence. "So....". He looked over at her, desperately trying to find his voice, then calming himself to speak. "I'm sorry... for the way that I started this... I really wish that I could have just talked to you." "I really wish that you would have Chase.. but, I have to admit, the whole secret admirer thing, was kinda cute... even if it was frustrating as hell." she laughed softly "I mean.. I kept waiting for the big joke of 'hey, just kidding ya fat cow' cuz it just seemed so.. unbelievable." He had a brief moment of disbelief, looking at her "God, no.. I mean.. who the hell would.. no Devyn.. God no." "It's alright Chase... I've been called worse."
He turned on the couch to face her, bringing his left knee up, sitting on his foot "What? How could anyone even think that.. let alone say it?" "Chase.. I have eyes.. and" "And if they tell you that, your eyes lie..." he interrupted her with a soft whisper. She shook her head, taking her eyes away from him, looking down at the body that she has hated for years. Other than her breasts, that she both hated, and appreciated at the same time, she saw nothing desirable about herself. She looked back up at him, sighing softly, "It's just.. not a lot of people have ever shown interest in me.. other than to ask if...." she looked down, blushing a little, both amused and disgusted "... if they're real.". He almost choked on his drink of water. He sat the cup down, then looked at her, almost giggling "You must have lived your life surrounded by blind idiots.. and ... well.. gay people."
She laughed softly "seriously... what's the deal Chase? What do you really want here?" she looked at him, both anxious to hear his answer, and afraid of what he might say. "Honestly?" he whispered. "No Chase... I want you to lie to me..." she joked. "Honestly, Devyn... I don't really know.. I want.. nothing... and .. Everything..". She looked into his soft warm eyes, wanting desperately to believe him, but not willing to trust anyone. He was so much different alone, the stuttering mostly gone. Still awkward and shy, with the occasional blush, and nervous fidgeting with his fingers. She wondered, for a minute if that was his game, to play the shy boy until he got her into bed, then walk away laughing. She had a flash of anger at the thought, narrowing her eyes at him. "well, you can't have everything and nothing Chase.. that's not who I am.". "No.. no.. that's not what I meant.. not.. not at all." he spoke quickly, trying to choose his words. "Then what do you mean?"
He looked down at his fumbling hands, then back up into her eyes "It's hard to explain.. and it'll take a minute... but, I can try if you really want to hear it?". She laughed, throwing a chip at him "I wouldn't have invited you in if I didn't want to know what was going on in that head of yours... tell me what you want Chase.". He took a deep breath, trying to form it in his mind, before he spoke, god this would be easier to write in a letter. "I... I want to know you... I mean... I've thought you were beautiful since you first transferred in last year.. and every time you talk in class, everything I've heard you say.. you just, you just seem like ... like someone I'd like to know.". She blushed a little at his word of calling her beautiful. "God no... no.. you don't have to call me beautiful Chase.. I know..." "you don't understand..." he said softly "I... don't.. I hate false compliments.. they're nothing but lies wrapped in flowers.. I try not to lie.".
She looked back at him, a little disappointed "So... you just.. want to know me.. like, be my friend?". He looked around the room for a minute, then back into her eyes, grinning "well.. I was kinda... kinda... hoping.. that.. maybe ... eventually... I could be more than just your friend.". She blushed deeply, averting her eyes from him for a minute, then looking back to him. "Tell me about yourself Chase.." "What do you want to know? Ask me anything.". He surrendered himself completely to her questions, wanting, for the first time, to reveal his heart to someone. She leaned back against the armrest of the couch, looking at him. "Are... are the stories true Chase? .. Are you.. are you some kind of crazy person?" 'Dammit' he thought to himself as he looked down at his scared fists, then back up to her. "S....sort of..."
