⸻ HE WAS PACING BACK AND FORTH at the park. tears were streaming down his face and he was panting heavily with his hand clenching his shirt. his footsteps echoed in the silence and his soft sobs could be heard from a distance due to the empty night at the playground.
his eyes glanced down at his phone multiple times, waiting for his older sister to return his messages or his calls. he was panicking, fists shaking every time he impatiently dialed the phone number over and over again as it became harder to breathe.
oikawa's phone began to ring before he could press the call button and he raced to answer it, the sleepy voice of his sibling asking him what was going on. oikawa was scared, barely managing to get his words out, "t-tadame, i-i did something bad." his fist moved to his mouth, biting into it.
"what do you mean? where are you?"
he quickly explained that he was at the park alone and he had been waiting for her to answer him for going on thirty minutes. after being scolded by tadame for staying out alone at nearly midnight, oikawa was told to stay where he was until eventually a car had approached, beeping for the young man to get inside.
tadame's arms instantly wrapped around him as he cried. the teardrops hitting her shoulders as the events of only a bit ago repeated over and over in his head. oikawa knew it was over, he had ruined everything. he knew there would be no going back from what he did and that [name] would most likely never want to speak to him again.
"what happened, oikawa?" the brown haired woman asked, glancing towards the back where her son had fallen asleep on the seat of the car. her hand rubbed his back as his breaths grew rapid, "hey, calm down, it's okay. i'm here."
the panic induced teenager couldn't bring himself to explain right away. all he felt was fear that maybe even his beloved sister would view him differently, maybe even distance herself from him as well. his heart was sinking with every thought causing more tears to fall down his puffy eyes and slide down to his chin as he sniffled and sobbed into his shoulder.
oikawa had never felt so much pain before and he didn't understand what he was supposed to do. even in his past relationships, he had never cried so hard over someone, especially when he would be the one that was broken up with. he hated the pain, he hated the tears, he hated how emotionally weak he had become after losing the spring playoffs.
"i kissed [last name]," his voice was low, almost being drowned out by the loud, heavy inhales and exhales. he lifted his head slightly, brown eyes looking up to see his sister's reaction that hadn't changed in the slightest. she was still giving him the same soft and gentle look she always would.
tadame hummed, her hand moving to the back of her younger brother's head and pet it softly. she was searching for the words to say, the advice she could give him, but her mind was drawing blanks.
"we all make our mistakes, tooru."
the setter wasn't satisfied with that response, in fact, it only made him feel worse and his sister could tell. oikawa didn't say anything in response, only pulled away from the woman and pressed his head against the seat of the car with his arm resting on the door.
tadame knew he was still down by the way he was avoiding to look back over to her and the way his eyes were still welling with tears from every horrible thought in his scrambled mind that made matters even more serious.
"tooru," her hands moved to his shoulder, thumb softly rubbing him reassuringly, "i know you're scared and you think you probably messed everything up, but trust me when i say, in a few years you're going to look back on that kiss and laugh- whether it's with [name] or not."
she let out a sigh, her unoccupied hand moving to the steering wheel, "[name] isn't the kind of girl to hold a grudge against you for feelings you can't control, she'll understand, and if you're worried that she'll avoid you because of one little kiss then you're mistaken. if anything, she might even try looking for you."
oikawa blinked away his tears, fist moving to his lips as he stared out the window to look at the lights that glowed in the night sky. his heart was slowly mending back together with every word tadame spoke to him, but it wasn't enough to shoo away the lump of guilt in his stomach.
"in life, there's going to be so much pain and heartbreak," the young mother explained, removing her palm from her brother to start her car, "what matters the most is that the people by your side are willing to help you through that pain."
and with that, she pulled out of the park and took tooru oikawa, the heartbroken volleyball player, back home.
