~Delilah's POV~
"Hey, honey. How was school?" Mom chirped as I walked in the front door, finally having made it home after my twenty minute walk.
I groaned and collapsed on the couch, my head pounding and my skin feeling hot from the intense heat outside. It was unfathomably hot outside today, but it wasn't like that was new. I should probably be used to it by now. "It was good." I answered her, fanning my face with one of my hands. Mom smiled and sat down on the other couch. "Your dad is supposed to be home in an hour." She told me, the news making me blink in surprise. "An hour?" I echoed, raising my brows. "But that's super early. Dad never comes home early." I pointed out. Even before he'd gotten a new boss, my dad was a very hard worker so he often worked long hours, from five AM until at least eight PM. It sucked but it was what it was.
Mom grinned. "I know, but his new boss noticed how hard he works, so he said it's okay if dad leaves early once or twice a week. Plus, there's something that we have to tell you when he gets home." She said, making me furrow my brows in wonder. What was it that I had to wait for him to be home before I could know what they wanted to tell me?
Regardless, I just decided to wait until dad got home before I asked about it. They'd tell me eventually anyway, and it was only an hour before he was supposed to get home. "Do you have homework?" Mom asked, making me glance over at her as I took off my backpack and nodded my head. "Yeah. I have this week's homework for some classes and then last week's too." I answered, pouting. I had already done most of this week's homework except for the stuff I had been given today, and I had started to do a couple of assignments from last week already as well. It probably wouldn't take me too long to do it all this week. Maybe I'd be able to hang out with Juli, Tate and Kailee this weekend after all.
While I was waiting for dad to get home I decided to do some homework, hearing the TV play Hell's Kitchen in the background. My mom liked to cook and she loved Gordon Ramsey, so she watched Hell's Kitchen on a pretty regular basis. Admittedly, though, I liked it too. I didn't cook, though. I just watched it if it was on and I had nothing to do.
By the time my dad got home I had managed to finish three worksheets, which I felt was pretty good for only an hour's worth of time. He walked into the living room with his suit jacket hanging from his grip, mom was practically leaping off the couch to throw her arms around him in a hug. After they greeted each other and dad put his jacket up on the coat hanger they sat down on the other couch, and I knew they were about to tell me what was on their minds because of the way they glanced at one another.
"So, I got a new boss, as you know by now," My dad began, his brown eyes on me. "And we've become pretty good pals, since he's close to my age and seems to like me. My last boss was practically the crypt keeper." He said, causing my lips to twitch in amusement. "But anyways, your mom and I decided to invite him and his family over to have dinner with us on Saturday evening. We expect you to be here. I already know you'll be on your best behavior, because you always are." He told me, causing me to blink in surprise at him. I didn't know that he and his new boss had actually gotten close enough to have dinners together.
"Won't it be a little weird, though...? I'm the only child." I pouted, but dad shook his head. "Actually, he's got a son your age who's going to be joining us. Maybe you two could become friends." Dad suggested, a genuine smile growing on his lips.
I bit my lip and gently nodded my head. "What time?" I asked, cocking my head to the side curiously. I knew it was obviously around dinner time, but I just wanted to be sure I was ready before they all got here. I didn't want to look like a bum in front of strangers, after all. "They'll be here at seven." He answered, a relieved look in his eyes that I was just easily accepting it. But I was pretty easy with these types of things, and I didn't like causing problems over dumb things. It was just a dinner, after all.
