Mick remained in the doorway when Joanne was called in by Dr. Bernard. "Can you come with me, please?". Joanne asked and Mick nodded slowly, not feeling like it was his place to be with her in a moment like this. "I want to go home". Liam cried softly. "I know, honey". Joanne caressed his face. "We get your sister checked up and then we go". She said, her voice slightly breaking as she felt her eyes getting watery again. He nodded now and sat on a chair. "Hi, Joanne". Dr. Bernard said, looking at her from over her glasses. She was updated about the situation and didn't ask Joanne anything about it. "Sit down and get comfortable, please". Joanne did as she ordered and lifted her shirt. Her clothes were dirty and her hair was messy from the many times Gabriel had pulled on it. She felt a head ache pounding in the back of her skull and when she leaned back against the chair after raising her shirt, she felt so incredibly tired. She didn't even jump when the cool gel was placed on her stomach and Dr. Bernard quickly made an ultrasound.
"Your bloodpressure is high, but I assume that you will rest soon". She mentioned. "Next to that, she looks perfectly fine. Make sure you keep your stresslevel as low as you can in the upcoming weeks and I advice to take folate, iron and vitamin D supplements". The doctor advices, gently cleaning up Joanne's stomach. Joanne nodded. "I'll schedule your next appointment a little earlier". She said next. Joanne nodded once more. "Thank you for your time". Joanne said as she got up with some help from Mick. "It's no problem". Dr. Bernard gave her the same smile of compassion as Mick had offered her earlier. "We're going home, boys". Joanne told her kids and they held onto her hand, silently walking outside. Mick opened the door of the car for them and she moved to sit in the backseat with them, holding them close while seated in the middle. Mick got behind the wheel again, driving home in an easy pace as they had enough rushed moments today. He had been out on enough missions like these and he could imagine how traumatic it must be for Joanne and especially the two young boys.
Mick turned the car through the gate and parked it on one of the parking spots on the porch. He opened the door again for her and she got out with Liam and Jules. Annemarie waited at the door, a concerned look on her face as she let them in. "Can you help them to shower and get to bed?". Joanne asked and Annemarie nodded, letting her be as she kneeled to embrace them tightly. "Your dad and I love you". Joanne said. "He is seeing a doctor now. Charles will be home soon". She explained to them. They nodded slowly, rubbing their eyes as they hugged her tightly back. Annemarie helped them upstairs and Joanne let out a big sigh. Mick was still by her side and he saw how she crumbled now the kids were upstairs with Annemarie. He reached out for her and she gladly accepted the gesture. She started crying again, but this time she let everything out. She was sobbing, her tears probably wetting Mick's button up, but he held her as long as she wanted and softly stroke her back. "Do you want something to eat? A small meal? You can take your supplements then as well". Mick spoke up as she dried her face and cleaned her nose.
Her eyes were bloodshot. "Yeah, okay". Joanne answered, not hungry at all, but the tiny human growing in her might be. Mick guided her to the kitchen and made the staff get her a glass of water first. She slowly drank it, her throat had ran dry and her skin had turned purple and blue from the grip of Gabriel's hand as he nearly choked her. She realized how sore she was when she sat down at the kitchen table while Mick ordered the kitchen staff to get her something to eat meanwhile. "Do you know when Charles will be home?". Joanne asked her guard and he shook his head. "They're fixing him up right now, I think it might take a day". Mick explained. "Do you want me to guard your bedroom door tonight?". He asked. Joanne fiddled with a broken nail meanwhile, biting it off. She wanted to say no, but she was terrified to be alone at the moment, so she nodded. "That would be comforting". Mick gave her a gentle smile. "Alright". He replied. Some toast and an omelette was ready for her and she slowly started to eat, finally warming up as well as she had felt stone cold from the moment at school till now.
