An hour had passed as it took me ages to come to terms with making the call. All I heard against my ear was the vibrations of the ringing. It felt like hours that it had taken before I heard

"Hello?"

This was the moment I tell my mum

"Hi there! Is Darcy Smith available to speak right now?"

"Let me check for you."

I was sweating and I couldn't help but bite my nails. It's a habit I developed whenever I got nervous. All I heard was muffled voices in the background and the passing of the phone.

"Hello, Darcy Smith speaking."

"Mum I just got out of the offi-"

"Oh my gosh honey! How did it go! I'm sure you did amazing. What's it like there, are the people nice-"

"Mum!" I couldn't help but laugh over how excited she was. It made it a bit easier to tell her the news.

"Okay I'm sorry! Go ahead. I'm just excited"

"Well I did get in bu-"

I couldn't describe the next sound I heard. All I can say it was her screaming with excitement and laughter. I couldn't help but laugh because people were probably looking her on the ward thinking she'd gone insane.

"Baby I KNEW you could do it! Oh my gosh you have no idea how proud I am of you. Your dreams are coming true!"

"Well. Kind of"

"What do you mean?"

"I got offered a job at the UoFaD. Just not the one in London"

"Oh babe I'm so sorry. That's the one you've been dying to go to! But it's okay! At least you were offered a job at a company!"

"Actually mum, it's better than London. And will give me more chance to show off my work. It's just. Far away."

"No. Way. That's amazing Raelynn!"

"What do you mean kind of! I don't care how far away it is, If it means your dream comes true then fuck it! Go for it! So where's the job?"

"Uhm- New York"

"RAELYNN MAY SMITH! that's fucking amazing!"

"Yeah but mum the thing is I don't want to lea-"

"Don't you dare say what I think your about to. If it's about me being on my own I'll be fine! I'll be more than fine knowing my beautiful baby girl is pursuing her dreams in none other than NY! It felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. All I wanted was for my mum to be okay by herself. She was right. This is exactly what I wanted, she knew me better than I knew myself. And it wasn't as if I couldn't visit her in the holidays right? So I said

"I'll make the call now."

I stuck to my word. After I had spoken to my mum I dialled Carlas office number.

"Hello Miss Carla- Jones speaking"

"Hi Miss, it's Raelynn who you spoke to about an hour ago?"

"Ah yes! How can I help"
