I was sat across Sam who had returned from his play date. He is currently mimicking aeroplane noises whilst using the utensils as well, you guessed it, aeroplanes.
"Sam, can you please put the utensils down," chided mum.
"Aww, but aeroplanes are so cool!" defended Sam whilst pouting.
And so, mum began lecturing Sam about table manners. Dad and I gave each other knowing looks and simply resumed eating. The menu for tonight is - curry chicken, scrambled eggs and rice. It's simple but really yummy! Besides baking, my mum can really cook.
After the lecture, dad asked me, "So, how was the first day of school kiddo?" I rolled my eyes at his nickname for me but there was a smile at the corner of my mouth.
"Well, it's like any other year except that this is my last year in Rosethorn High. You know, graduation and stuff," I simply shrugged. "I'm not so sure about college though."
"Ahh, graduation. It's a special year. You still have time to think it through. Whatever your decision is, I'll have your back," dad said whilst giving me a thumbs up.
After dinner, I helped mum with the dishes. "So, any boys?" mum asked whilst emphasising on the word 'boys'.
I raised an eyebrow at her. "Maybe, who knows?" My cheeks were warm and I'm sure that it probably looks like a baboon's bottom or something.
"I knew it! What's his name?" mum practically shrieked like a school girl. I winced. And this is why I don't tell her anything that has got to do with the opposite gender. I mean, she gets all pumped up and she barely knows the guy!
"Muuum, can we not talk about this?" I replied whilst slumping my shoulders. "It's nothing important."
But it is.
"Nothing important? It is anything but nothing! Aww, my baby girl is all grown up. So, who's the lucky boy?" mum continued and there was a twinkle in her eyes.
Urgh, here goes nothing. "Ryder. He's a senior like me at Rosethorn High," I started. "But he doesn't even notice me. Probably doesn't even know my name."
"What? But how could that be? Don't you talk to him? I mean, he's a senior like you too and I'm sure you've crossed paths," mum shot one question after the other.
I sighed. "It's not that simple mum. I'm not confident enough and it's complicated--" mum interrupted, "Nonsense! If you like that boy, you should talk to him! It's the twenty-first century for goodness sake. It doesn't mean that boys have to make the first move."
"Well, I suppose."
"Just talk to him Sera," mum said. "It's worth a shot. Let him know you."
"Thanks mum. I needed this," I smiled. She kissed me good night and headed upstairs to her room.
I washed the remaining dishes and headed upstairs. I plopped down on my bed and sighed, "I guess I'll have to talk to him after all."
With that, I fell asleep, thinking of Ryder.
