I paced around the parking garage near Ryan's car as police took photos of the scene. I felt some odd energy radiating from the car, like someone was still there, hiding.
It was hot, the air felt heavy and suffocating. The air conditioning kicked in but I still was sweaty.
I tried to hide my anxiety. Ryan was one of my close friends, and like I told him before, I wouldn't want anything to happen to him. It was even worse at that time because I wasn't even sure who was behind it, and I didn't know if he was safe or in danger.I closed my eyes and tried to push the aura back, but the further I pushed, it resisted. It stretched outward and snapped back to wear it began, but smaller around me. The aura was like a rubber band with high resistance, trapping me inside. I felt it squeezing my sides and making everything look blurry.
A cop walked up and tapped me on the shoulder and I snapped back to reality.
"Mr. Madej?" He asked.
"Hm? Yes?" I replied, a little taken back.
"Do you know of any problematic people in Ryan's life that could have caused this?" he asked.
I rocked back and forth on my feet as the cop's mood turned impatient.
"I can't name anyone off the top of my head. There's some crazy people in Los Angeles, let me tell you." I joked. Joking helps hide or soften overwhelming emotion.
"I'm aware. We can't find any immediate matches but we'll be sure to keep you and the staff here updated." he responded.
I smiled nervously and watched him walk back to his car. Then, I felt a tinge of shock hit the back of my neck. It sent a chill down my spine and I became weak in the knees. I collapsed and tried to call out but the cops were gone. I was alone.
My eyes blacked out and I could only see a blacked-out silhouette of Ryan in my vision.
An eerie, haunting voice echoed around the corners of my brain.
"We have gained new blood. Your power will fade away as we drain. All hail the Watcher."
I opened my eyes and drew in breath. I felt someone rubbing my back as I came to.
Sara was leaning over me along with some of my coworkers.
"Are you okay? We saw you faint." she asked.
I shook my head, "No. I'm not okay. I just need to get home."Back at our house, I tore open my work bags full of binders trying to find our research team's information on the Watcher. I texted Katelyn, the developer. I emailed the original investigators. I stayed up to the wee hours of the morning for any lead as to where Ryan was. The Watcher and his group of followers had him and probably were seeking some sort of revenge on us for slandering his name.
Honestly - how petty.
