That night, we made a plan. I told police we had to step away for personal reasons, but I just didn't want to have to explain any of this to anyone.
"Gateways usually appear in the least touched rooms of a building." Sara said.
"Our guest room may be a good place to start." I pointed out.

I drew together a backpack stuffed with survival supplies. I had a holster around my waist with a hunting knife, pepper spray and a taser. Sara had her own selection of weapons, including a hand pistol.
"When the hell did you get that?" I asked, shocked.
"Relax, it's empty. Well, for now. I initially bought it for a prop, but I went out and got some bullets. No one wants to fuck with a girl holding a gun." she said.
I smiled and let out a light chuckle. I admired how adorably nerdy she was. She had a knack for drawing, sculpting, and music, and that always drew me in.
I leaned in and kissed her on the forehead.
She giggled but tried to pretend it annoyed her. She rolled her eyes.
"Let's get this shit going!" she shouted, clapping her hands.

Sara walked to our guest bedroom. We had it in case her parents ever came to stay with us, it was also her sewing/painting studio.
She placed her hand on the door and slid it in a square pattern around each corner. She felt the groove in the wood, tracing a finger over each tiny crack.
"Yep. This is the one."
She glanced back at me.
"Alright, this might be pretty overwhelming. The portal here is strong, maybe a little too strong. Just close your eyes, hold my hand, and you should be fine." she said.
She held out her small, dainty hand and I closed my eyes, smiling like a dork.
The excitement I felt soon turned to anxiety when I heard the atoms around me vibrating. Sara pulled me towards her and we stepped into the portal.
I could hardly see a thing except pure white light. My ears were ringing at a constant pace, like a chime that never faded. My fingers and face went completely numb, like pins and needles.
I couldn't breathe. My lungs felt compressed beneath the pressure that surrounded me.
Then, all of the sudden, my eyes opened. I smelled the strong mildew, felt the chilly air, and my hands began to tremble.
I opened my eyes to an oddly familiar yellow ambience. It was so cold, I could see my breath.
I started to be able to breathe again. I coughed and gasped for a full gulp of air. It was almost suffocating but I managed to catch some sort of rhythm.
I looked beside me and Sara lay on the floor unconscious. The transition must have drained all of her energy.
I rubbed her back and tousled her hair gently until she came to.
"Hey...looks like we made it in one piece at least." she joked in a hushed voice.
I snorted, "I actually think a few molecules got left back at the house." I said.
She scoffed and giggled, "Alright, well, let's get off our asses and find our friend, shall we?"
We started out by taking a straight beeline towards the other end of the room. We were met with a flimsy wooden door with a broken knob.
I jiggled the handle around to see if it would open.
"Hm," I said, "what's the point of a door if it doesn't work?"
Sara looked down another hallway, where it wasn't totally dark but lights were still very scarce.
"Let's stick with hallways for now." she said.
I shivered as the air grew colder.
"Hey, any reason why it's so freezing in here? I think I'll get hypothermia before any crazy demon attacks me." I asked.
"If we keep walking, the more our surroundings adjust. We're new energy in this place, once they analyze us it should get warmer." she said.
I wrapped my jacket tighter around me, "Come on, already, analyze me." I mumbled.
