Holding Ryan by each arm, we dragged his limp body out of the portal. He flopped to the carpeted floor of the apartment, and the both of us fell right down next to him.
We were exhausted, emotionally and physically.
I sat up and rubbed my face. Sara crawled over to me and touched my arm.
I leaned in to her and hugged her tightly. I kissed her on the forehead as tears streamed down her face.
"We made it." I whispered.
"We really did." she replied breathlessly.
We glanced down at Ryan, who was still out like a light.
I noticed something was off. I didn't feel any sort of aura radiating from him. I touched his hand and tried to feel for a pulse.
I relaxed when I felt the beating rhythm in his wrist.
"What's wrong?" Sara asked.
"I don't know. I can't feel any energy coming off of him. He's still alive, but I can't detect any sort of emotional charge." I said.
Sara looked shocked, "Holy shit. I thought...well...now that you mention it...my brain is all jumbled. I usually have perfect clarity, but for some reason, my thoughts are stacked on top of one another."
We both looked at each other and burst out laughing.
"Damn, did we lose our powers?" Sara said.
"Good riddance. If I'm honest, they were less of a blessing and more of a curse." I relied.
She lay her head down in my lap and smiled at me.
"I think we deserve to feel like normal people for once." I said.
