SEVEN: GOODBYE NENE

If wishes were horses beggars would ride.

Like normally, I and Nene didn't get along with our new mother. We still sold sachet water and even graduated with first class degree to selling buns and doughnuts for people.

It wasn't easy, it really wasn't. We'd wake up very early, fry the buns and the doughnuts and start selling. We don't even eat before going out. Courtesy of the parents in the house.

I thought that I'd have Nene by my side, I thought I'd have her all my life, to protect her and care for her. I never knew my Nene would leave me.
I never knew I'd lose her so cruelly.

It was a normal day like every other day. Azuka had given Nene a sum of #5,000 naira to buy food items for her at the market. Normally, She would have sent me but I had things to do in the house. I gave Nene a kiss on her head. Never knew it would be the last I'd ever see her again.

Nene was on her way to the market. She was happy that she was given freedom for a while. I was going to meet her a little later, since I had a batch of buns to fry.

I set out later, carrying the rubber of buns on my head. I had gone into the market only to hear people shouting "Thief thief."

I was confused as to why they were making such noises. A girl was being dragged with a tyre around her.

"She stole my five thousand naira." A woman shouted.

Five thousand naira, I thought. Oh no, Nene has five thousand.

I went further towards the crowd to see kerosene being poured on the girl.
The girl was my Nene.

"She's not a thief!" I screamed. "Please don't burn her. Let's resolve this, please."

"No, she's a thief." The woman who claimed her money had been stolen said.

"Ma, you're mistaken. My sister, didn't steal your money. Please tell them to stop. They'll kill my sister."

"Sister, help me!" Nene shouted.

I saw fear in her eyes, the spirit of death was hovering around my sister.

"Please beg them to stop, please." I knelt down, begging and pulling at the woman's dress. She was hard hearted, she didn't listen.

A man lit a match stick, I stood up and  ran towards him. Before I could get to him I was grabbed by some people. Nene was set on fire.

"Sister!" Nene screamed, the fire burning all over.

"Let me go, let me go." I pulled but they were too strong. My sister was burning. My sister was dying.

The woman stared, I wondered if she'd make it in this life.

"Madam." Someone tapped her shoulder. "See your money. Na your pikin you give na."

"Jesus!" I screamed and fell to the ground. I watched my precious Nene burn. Nene breathed her last after glancing at me....

My sister, my Nene was dead....

"Nene! Nene!" I shouted, rolling in the dirt. "You all must burn me too. You must kill me."

The woman tried to console me. I grabbed her hair and the neckline of her dress.

"God will punish you. You will never know peace in this life. Your carelessness cost the life of my sister. God will punish you!" I shouted  at the top of my voice.

I bowed my head, the tears unending, the pain, killing me. Nene was gone forever..

Goodbye Nene, Goodbye my Princess.
