Jasper walked slowly down the hallway to the file room. He was reminiscing on the days that he was Adam's Dad's partner. Randal taught him everything he knows today. Except for taking care of his son. That he could not handle. Jasper saw Adam as his dad when he was fifteen and it was hard to give him instructions and Jasper was ten when he joined the agency. He walked down the hallway and the walls seemed to be closing in on him. His breathing went shallow and he leaned up against the wall for support. Jasper stopped walking and he slid down the wall until he sat down and he let his imagination take him away to the past.
He saw a memory of him when he was a little scrawny ten year old boy who was deathly afraid of heights and yet he was standing on top of the rock wall paralyzed in fear as he stared at the obstacle course in from of him. His joints were locked up and his body shook.
"Jasper you can go it!" He heard Randal shout encouragingly from below.
"No I can't!" replied Jasper with fear in his voice.
"Yes you can! Just imagine you're on the ground. Nothing will go wrong!"
Jasper exhaled slowly as he shuffled his feet an inch forward. He imagined himself taking a walk with Randal, having fun and talking about his favorite subject which was cars. Jasper forgot that he was on the obstacle course until his foot slipped and he fell.A shrill scream bounced off of the walls as he hung on for dear life with his tiny legs kicking back and forth trying to find a grip.
"RANDAL HELP ME!!" Jasper screamed with tears streaming down his face.
"Jasper pull yourself up!" He called, "I know you can do it!"
"I can't!" He shouted back as he continues to cry.
"Just try!"
Jasper screamed in anger as he tried to pull himself up. It didn't work and he yelled again as he started falling. He knew he was going to die when he came in contact with the ground. He closed his eyes and he felt someone catch him. Jasper opened his eyes and through his tears he saw Randal holding him. Randal set him down and Jasper threw his arms around him and he cried harder.
"I'm sorry, Jasper" he heard Randal say as he hugged Jasper back, "I shouldn't have done that."Jasper let go of Randal and he looked him in the eye. He felt Randal gently wipe away the tears from his eyes.
"Shh. It's okay. We won't do anymore training for a while," Randal promised.
"Promise?" Jasper asked
Randal smiled and he nodded his head 'yes.' He let go of Jasper and Randal removed the necklace he was wearing. It was a wooden cross on a black leather cord. Randal put it on Jasper and he crouched down so they were eye level.
"This necklace is my promise, Jasper," Randal said with a smile on his face.
Jasper smiled back in response and Randal kissed his forehead. Then they walked out to hang out.The memory ended and Jasper was fingering the necklace. He wiped his eyes and he sighed shakily. "I guess I should start reading the files," he thought as he stood up and he put the necklace back underneath his shirt. Jasper put his hands in his pockets and he went into the room to read the file on the Fuzzy Guy.
